Civilizations 4 should have castles which surround your land with you forces protecting it.

especially if you look at the graphic in the medieval/ancient age (not sure which one

However, Castles were often at the center of towns. During times of war, the townsfolk could take shelter within the castle rather than be pillaged. So maybe 'castle' could be a middle ages upgrade to walls.

Did you put people in the fort? If so, you would have seen them shooting at units that pass by. Try them, they work well.

Forts already have a pretty decent defensive advantage, no need to pour more worker turns to make a fort a "castle" and give it an even higher defensive bonus. Fighting will become impossible if the AI ever built a successful Maginot Line of these "castles."

Besides, the medival forts look a lot like castles anyway, like others have said.

even if it was it doesn't matter, in that case you would simply need a castle with a moat to fire arrows

@madman75:
the reason castles often were at the center of towns was because they essentially were towns. towns came to the castles, not vic versa

No, Gogf, barricades cause units to stop when entering. Forts give a big defensive boost and cause you to take pot-shots at passers-by (the same as a unit with a ZOC).

And the castles in the city center are represented by the def.bonus of cities, so it's already there!

I always thought it very odd that my Chinese workers built western-style forts... it seemed a little too culturally intolerant to exclude the great Chinese defensive architecture from Civ after including the Great Wall... maybe the Europeans build castles, the Orient builds pagodas, the Native Americans (an oddly small culture) build longhouses, I dunno. :confused:
Hope these ideas help! :goodjob:
