Just a few ideas:
- It seems castles become obsolete too soon. Make corporation obsolete them instead of Economics. Corporation gives +1 commerce route and also obsoletes the great lighthouse (+1 commerce only in coastal cities), so it's a logical choice.
- Make walls generate culture (but only after the discovery of a later technology). They also should become obsolete just as castles do. Maybe the technology that obsoletes walls, should enable them to give culture (and forbid their construction, of course).
- Why stables don´t get obsolete never? It's weird you can build them, but you can`t build mounted units anymore...

What do you think?

I agree that castles arrive too late... they should be early medieval, not late medieval... by the time you're building castles, somebody's already got gunpowder. Probably should come with Feudalism instead of Engineering.

I also find it irritating that Cannon come at the very end of the Renaissance period, when historically they were the very first gunpowder weapons to be put into widespread use, at the end of the Medieval period... but I digress...

I don't think walls should generate culture or be obsoleted. They're obsoleted by default when gunpowder comes around, I don't seem the harm in allowing them to continue to be built after they're useless... also, some of your opponents may be very far behind and still producing non-melee units, so just because you've researched gunpowder doesn't mean your enemies are going to stop attacking you with ancient units.

It's true may be useful to construct new walls to protect you against an invasion of older units. But as I have seen in warlords, Castles do get obsolete now and their bonus against melee units is the same as walls. It seems an inconsistency to me. Perhaps the +1 trade route bonus should become obsolete but you could continue building castles?

And regarding to stables, it's no point allowing their construction when you can't build mounted units anymore...

The expiration of city walls is also pretty bad history. The "star" shaped city defenses, incorporating interlocking fields of fire, and earthenworks to diffuse the energy of cannonshot, were a factor in warfare all the way up through the mid 19th century. Having pre-Gunpowder and post-Gunpowder walls would be better- with aircraft being the tech that really obsoletes the improvement- but I can see why streamlining the game trumped historical accuracy. Still a tad frustrating, though.

Second that thought about Cannons, AriochIV

I am presently playing a game in which I am avoiding researching economics to avoid the loss of cash from the ton of castles which I have recently constructed. I am also avoiding Scientific Method, but this is "realistic" since I am playing as Gengis and already have over 60% of world (civ) population and the other civs are far behind in tech. I am playing at marathon speed and it seems that castles become obsolete too soon. They should continue until at least the discovery of radio or the hula hoop.

stables should obsoleted with flight but you could up grade them in to air ports
