Catapult doesn't shoot twice at the same target

I am still a beginner :D
I shooted with the catapult at a ship, hitted it and tried again next turn, when both the catapult and the ship were still at the same place.
This time it showed a big red cross, telling me I couldn't hit that target.
Why not? I was able to shoot at a cow the next square, but not that ship :D

Had you red-lined the ship? If the ship only had one hit point left, you cannot bombard it with a catapult. Only the hw'acha, bombers, and dromons (I think that is all) have lethal bombard (i.e. they can kill a unit by bombarding them)--other units can only bombard a unit until it is down to one hit point.

BTW how did you know this? I did read the Civilopedia and the manual, but I can't find this info (about only hitting until it is down to one hit point)

sometimes the Civilopedia and manual are incomplete

When you build stacks of 30 artillary to bomb units into submission and keep using it you become aware of this fact.

In Conquests (maybe in one of the PTW patches as well) "Lethal Bombardment" was added to the game which allowed you to "kill" units by bombarding them.

In Conquest's default rules the only units I'm aware of which have Lethal Bombardment active is Airplanes when bombing, Artillary peices do not have Lethal Bombardment by default but can be granted it by editing the rules in the game editor.

EDIT: BTW the reason for excluding Lethal Bombardment earlier was because it was seen as too powerful an ability. Pound a city with Artillary, then walk in without having to fight... rinse and repeat for the next city... as such you just need as many Offensive units as cities (or less, depending), but a heck of alot of Artillary.

Hwatcha also have lethal bombardment in Conquests (latest patch).

And the ability was always there, since Cruise Missiles had it from the start...
Note there is Lethal Land and Lethal Sea bombard, and both need to be enabled seperately.
Dromons e.g. have only Lethal Sea
Hwachas (c3c) IIRC only Lethal Land
Bombers (c3c) both.

We had Lethal Land Artillery (real Artillery, not puny Hwacha) in the beta testing for the R&R mod, and it was absolutely overpowered. And I for one don't like LL for WW2 level bombers; I'd give it to Fighters instead, and Stealth Bombers.

I agree with Doc Tsiolkovski, lethal Bombardement of Bombers in C3C makes them the perfect weapon. The AI often has not researched flight by then and is absolutely helpless against bombers, as if redlining units would not be strong enough! :(

I like to turn it off, but I have no option to say, no lethal bombardement in fortresses and cities, but in open terrain.

Well... enough of this...
They will not patch Civ3 anymore, no more balancing, they will not even fix old and annoying bugs like the sub bug.

maybe civil defence should prevent lethal bombardment in that city... would make it a more useful building

That would be the perfect solution for me as well (and it was my suggestion in the post-release forum..but hey, they prefered to remove Radio instead  )
