Cannons have 8 bombard and cost 40 shields to build. Catapults have 4 bombard and cost 20 shields to build. So catapults are just as good as cannons, unless you're worried about support costs. A catapult/swordsman army is nearly unstoppable, but I don't think cannons and cavalry are as convenient of a combination.
if i don't have iron early in the game, i build about 10 archers and 15 catapults and take ai citys that have iron for swordsmen. a veteren archer attacking a regular fortified spearman in a city dosent have much of a chance, unless the spearmen is brought down to 1 or 2 hit points, then it's easy.
Catapults are worth it. I like to have 6 to 10 when I make early war. The best part about them is they are cheap and they dont need a barracks. This lets all your towns contribute to the defense effort even without barracks. Catapults cut down on your losses tremendously.
Catapults are also good for defense too. It's nice when your catapult knocks a hp off the swordsman that's attacking your spearman - can make all the difference.
Yes, catapults are great.
Their effectiveness against the troops you may fight in the AA is just the same as the effectiveness of trebuchets against MA troops or cannons against late MA troops.
With a lot of catapults you can redline any enemy unit and win almost every battle without serious casualties.
For the same cost (600 shields), an army of 10 swordsmen and 15 catapults is much better than an army of 20 swordsmen.
I do love artillery of any age. Keep in mind, though, that catapults are fairly ineffective when bombarding towns with walls or cities (above size 6). Hopefully you're not trying to siege metropoli with 'em. I still build cats for their versatility in defense of home territory. They are somewhat harder to use in enemy territory when they can't use roads for mobility and can't go on unroaded jungle/mountain/marsh.
Just a point that I wanted to bring up for C3C:
It seems that the Great Wall wonder has a strange effect on bombardment. Normally, artillery, of any sort, fired at a city will strike defending units first before hitting improvements/wonders/population. I've had a few experiences where an opponent's cities with GW protection behaved oppositely--I would destroy the palace, temps, even the Great Wall instead of hitting units. Anybody else notice this?
