Whenever I try to download my Civ Vanilla from my disc, I always get this little pop up window saying;

Component: Program Files
File Group:
File:
Error: Catastrophic failure

It gets up to 8% and it stops when it reaches the file C:\... \Civilization III/Art\units\Galley\GalleyDefault.flc and then the whole thing closes. WHAT'S WRONG?! :mad: [pissed]

Maybe just a bit of dirt on the CD? I would wipe it clean with a glass cleaning cloth and rubbing alc.

The try to open the disk and each fold to see if it gets an error. If not, then use regedit to remove all civ references and delete any folders and try again.

If I had more than one drive, I would use the burner as they tend to have better equipment.

Alright I re-cleaned as you said but with warm water and dish washing soap instead (also works) and also put it in my burner driver. Now I get this new error. It says, "CRC error: The file C:\Program Files\Infrogames Interactive\Civilization III\Art\units\cannon\CannonRun.wav doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor." So I said to myself, "Ok, let's try his regedit idea." So I clicked Start>Run and I typed in regedit and my Civilization folder is already gone. So then I tried your idea of opening each folder to see if I get an error and I did get an error when I tried opening files "data1.cab" and "data2.cab". Now what? :(

And now this new error popped up. I decided to click "Ignore" (twice, cause the same error popped up at 21%). Now it says;

Component: Program Files
File Group: Program Files
File: E:\data2.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

And it stopped at 42% and it closed itself when I clicked [ Ok ]. It stopped at the file C:\... \Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Art\Flics\HI_C01.flc Is it my computer or is it my disc? :confused:

Well it sounds like something is wrong with the CD. Unfortuneltly I don't believe they will give you a replacement.

You could see if it can be copied by some tool like CloneCD. You may need to just buy a new one. If you are in the US you probably can find one in a GameStop or someplace like it used real cheap.

Sometimes a one for one copy tool can read past the errors and copy it to your HD and you can burn out a new CD or try to install from the image. Alcohol120 is another tool.

It is just wrong that anyone can have a CD with problems and not get it fixed by the publisher. They should let you send it in and pay shipping for a replacement. I guess it cost more for shipping than to buy a new one.

Have you tried their web to see if those errors are known?

I had similar problems after buying a new computer and trying to intall CivIII and then Conquests. I had 2 corruption errors in the art files, but after a few attempts at restarting the installs, I used "ignore".

The game would sometimes run alright for a few turns...then crash...and they wouldn't replace the disks. And, yes, I tried cleaning them.

Finally bought Civ3Complete, and that solved the problem. This was before Civ4 came out, but it only cost about $30 on Amazon. I just didn't have the patience to keep fooling with the old disks.

Yes, I have tried their website and it only gave me antitidotes (can't find the word) to the problems I've had previously (from like a year ago). I guess I'll try your CloneCD method then...:)
