Workarounds and suggestions for making Civ III run well in 2023

Very briefly using steam
-install steam version of civ 3 (or add non steam version to steam)
-force it to use proton
-copy c3x into conquests folder as usual
-make sure Linux compability is enabled in c3x ini file (it is by default)
-add c3x install.bat as a steam game
-force it to use proton and run it
-run civ 3, disable all sounds.

It's the laziest way of working around the fact that certain sound effects will start looping then crash the game on Linux. You can also try replacing the individual broken sound files with shorter versions that appear to work, as per this discussion.

Hi, I have a quick question about compatibility. In the past with Civilization III, I was able to use the F keys to see things like top 5 best cities, your general position in production/culture/etc, all the wonders and who owns them. These were like F6 - F12. I think F1 - F6 was also a quick shortcut to pull up your advisors. Since I can see the advisors with other methods these first few aren't a problem, but now with both my desktop and laptop I can no longer access these other screens. I'm using windows and have tried both the GOG and Steam versions. Does anyone have a workaround?

I'm still on Win8.1, and my F-keys work in-game (C3Complete, GOG version) just like they always did (albeit with the occasion crash, apparently triggered when I ask to speak to an Advisor while the game is busy thinking about something else...), so take this with a pinch of salt, but...

IIRC, @Quintillus posted in another thread recently, that in the newest version(s?) of Windows (or on the newest keyboards?), you now have to press (hold down?) a "Func" button in order to use the F-keys as general functional buttons, rather than whatever specific task (media-player, browser usage, etc.) they're now programmed to perform by default.
