I have a standard CD-ROM that has been running on a default set of Win98 drivers for quite some time. As of recently, the drive will only read certain CD's, and under certain conditions:
1) The CD-ROM reads the CD as normal.
2) The CD-ROM only reads the CD if the computer is reboot. In other words, if I turn on the computer, the drive acts according to option 3). If I turn on the computer, and then restart it again, then the drive works according to option 1).
3) The CD-ROM just spins the disc and I hear a click every second or so, like it's trying to read a disc it doesn't understand.
Now the drive is consistent with the disc I am attempting to use - the same result occurs each time. How worn the disc is (scratches, etc) has no effect, nor whether it is factory made or a CD-R disc. If anything, the CD-R's have actually worked better.
Anyone have any idea why this all of a sudden started happening & what I can do to get it back to normal?
Updating drivers was my first thought, but since they are win98 defaults, it won't do much good.
Thx
