So you pushed that button and nothing happened?

Try rebooting the PC, then seeing if you can go through and update the driver.

If not, then go back into the hardware manager, and instead of trying the 'update driver' option, try the 'uninstall' option. This will uninstall the CDROM drive from the PC. If you then reboot, it will 'find' it, and install it again automatically, which <should> reinstall the driver for it again.

Can you tell me what type of CDROM drive (make and model) it is?
 
Well it said it couldn't find any better software suitable for my system or something.
 
Even so, if you read the small-print, it should say something like 'choose next to reinstall the existing driver'. :)

When it asked you to choose the locations to search for a suitable driver, to you specify to check 'windows update'? I believe that that is a non-standard option.

Did the CDROM drive come with your PC, or did you install it yourself?

No. It is purely a software change. When the computer bots, it chaecks to see if there are any 'new' devices installed, and if so, it installs the driver software for them. All you are doing via 'uninstall' is removing the software, and forcing windows to install it again. If the CDROM driver isn't working, then reinstalling it certainly can't help. :)

When you reboot, you should see a message like 'windows found a new device and is intalling the software for it".
 
Well that didn't work but i noticed that everytime the file that the error was on was a sound file of some sort. I'm not sure if that matters or not.
 
What do you mean by that? Do you mean that when you try and install civ, it starts installing then hangs when trying to read a sound file?

If you've got it to start reading info from the CD, then can you try the trick of copying everything to your hard-drive, then installing from that?
 
In windows explorer, create a new folder on your hard-drive.
Click on the icon for your CDROM to 'explore' it.
Select all the files on the CDROM pane, and drag them to the new folder you've created on the Hard Drive. This will copy the files to your hard drive.
Once its finished copying the files (assuming it does), go to the new folder you created, and double-click the file 'setup.exe'. :)
 
ya, it pops up with that and has the name of a file and its always a sound file.
 
So to summarise:

  1. When you try to install the game, it starts the process, but gets a wee-way through and then gives you an error (whilst trying to copy a sound file).
  2. In the windows device manager, there is an error indication by one of the driver files. Can you post a screenshot of that?
  3. Do all other CDs read and install without problems?
  4. Is this a new, completely clean (the CD), legitimately purchased copy of the game?

4. Yes, I actully went in and returned for a new copy of it, it still does not work.
 
Does it matter that I have an AMD Atholon, it's a 1.10 GHz and C3 requires 400 MHz
 
It's been both but latly its been wav files, I dont know what brand it is.
