Try rebooting the PC, then seeing if you can go through and update the driver.
If not, then go back into the hardware manager, and instead of trying the 'update driver' option, try the 'uninstall' option. This will uninstall the CDROM drive from the PC. If you then reboot, it will 'find' it, and install it again automatically, which <should> reinstall the driver for it again.
Can you tell me what type of CDROM drive (make and model) it is?
