Celebrating anyone?

Yes, there are already rumours of mutant turtles fighting crime from a base within the THDP sewers. Ought the people flock together to celebrate their efforts?
I'd like to see THDP much bigger than it is, but am unsure whether now is the right time to celebrate. I think that if we wait the 5 or 6 turns until we have consigned the Chinese to history then we can put all of the units into cities, maybe rehome a few to reduce unhappiness and break out the bubbly across the land. The growth in THDP should cover any reduction in science, if not straightaway then certainly over the turns after celebration, and the happy people will still produce enough cash to cover everything. We can rush any aqueducts and sewer systems felt necessary in the time we take to finish off China and then take advantage of them in the celebrations. We should definitely leave it as late as possible to rush them though, as we'll be able to amass quite a few shields in the time it takes China to roll over.

I'm beginning to think it is about time to start some celebrating, indeed.

Even if it's just for about 4-6 turns, our science and taxes can take a slight dip as we explore our next option for conquer, and we will be much stronger for the efforts.

I'll try to do some celebrating over the nest few turns. I usually try to get as many cities as possible involved without going into a deficit or taking a huge hit on science. I do this in a lot of my games, so I know the little tweaking that one can do and micromanage extra food and happiness for those celebrating turns.

Just a warning: with the added people, there may be a need to start using a slight bit of luxuries - like 10% or so. I DO think that the cash and science will see an overall increase, though.

Another thought: For the times we are not celebrating how would the Inner Circle feel about adding a granary to THDP. It could help out a bit until we capture Rome and the Pyramids.

How much surplus food can we get from THDP? Until we get supermarkets and farmland, that is. I think that a granary may be a viable option if we can maximise food without affecting science. Science has to be the priority in this city and if we concentrate and get some superhighways going then we can finish the game with some bonus points for Future Techs. :D Although I doubt that Kev will be too bothered about growing all the cities for points but we'd at least have the choice between winning by spaceship and running down all the other civs. Remember that we are past the point when destroyed civs are reborn, whether or not it was turned on, so it shouldn't be too hard to win by either method, especially with the Hoover Dam.

THDP has a food surplus of 11 units. A granary might be a good idea, since all trade routes and all other improvments are already in place.

About the other cities, THDP and Athenae are our only core cities with banks (Potpolia is building one) and THDP is the only one with more than one trade route. No city except THDP has a colloseum. Considering this, a celebration may not be as effective as we want. Rushing colloseums will take care of some unrest quickly, but without banks we have to raise the luxururate very high for it to have efffect.

Hmm Banks can be built in the 5 main Luna province cities but they need to be staggered. The main cities are: Hippoville, Olympia, Dreadtwon, Cornmaster and Dellsville.

Perhaps someone could test the slider to see the possible results.

Granted, we'll have to take into account that there are units outside of cities and such, but we can likely get an idea about what %age of luxuries would be needed to start a celebration.

Keep in mind as well that there can be some "tweaking" done as well. By this, I mean that it will often help to move some workers off of hills and forests and move them to ocean tiles. Further, we can celebrate even if we have to make an entertainer. We just have to make sure that the city will still have a food surplus with the entertainer there in the city.

Once we stop celebrating, we can put everything back to the way it was.

BTW, Athenae is already size 12 and does not have a sewer system in it anyway - so it wouldn't grow. I think we can grow the rest of the home island cities to size 12 without banks - probably the same with other cities as well.

We're going to re-home our troops around the Chinese in Beijing so they'll be under Shake's, right? That way we can be transporting them while we are celebrating.

My every intention. In the mean time, doing all we can to increase the production of Beijng should be done. This means a factory ASAP. It can't have an offshore platform as it's not a harbor city (rats! we can't build ships here either), but railing the buffalo will help. Further, we can look into changing the wheat into different specials - forest or hills. Anyone recall what wheat becomes when an engineer "O's" it?

I'd like to support a bunch of military here. A barracks here would be a good idea, too.

Mining the wheat gives us a silk special. This will give us 2 shields on the tile instead of 1 with wheat. It also means that we can boost it to 3 with railroad. :D And all the extra trade will be useful. I reckon we can survive with a little less food there, especially as we'll be able to celebrate the city.
