Has anyone tried them out in BNW yet to see how much the game changes have improved them? I don't normally play a religious game and I've never been great with the Celts, but now I'm kind of curious. Anyone have any thoughts/advice?

Some have been concerned that having Piety unlock early means that the early faith isnt as useful. But I just finished a game with them and their Ceilidh Hall, and that extra Happiness came at just the right time to fuel more growth. The early faith combined with Sri Pada gave me enough Faith for my purposes.

Poor Celts. +1 faith and forests they cant use. At least they get to be a bit happy when all the good spots have already been taken by other civs... :p

As the Celts, you have a 99% chance to get first Pantheon. Depending on what you choose, getting the first Religion can be easier or harder.

The issue you have with opening Piety is that it gives you no culture to get more Policies. So you either can pick a Pantheon that gives more culture, or slow-roll it.

Probably a better first pick is to open Liberty and grab the Settler to get another City (and more Faith) and some Culture, and then Piety. Honor is another good choice, with the increased Barbarian raiding.

Hope this helps.

The negative side of Celts in BNW is that new Piety boosts religion for any civ choosing it (and much bigger for Maya). So their ability doesn't provide the same advantage in faith race as it was in G&K.

On the positive side, with Iron being unlocked on Bronze Working, the Celt strategy of opening it earlier is now more beneficial.

So overall I'd say they aren't changed that much.

P.S. In MadDjinn's last LP AI Celts decided to go Tradition first. Going Tradition or Liberty could make sense.

Oh, yeah, that's the other thing - is it just a Mac issue that I'm not getting iron revealed at Bronze-working like seemingly everyone else? (I recognize that perhaps that question is better asked elsewhere.)

I chose the Celts for my first BNW game, since I really liked using them in G&K. I think they still have a solid religion advantage, but if you want to fully utilize it, you still have to fill out Piety early, like other civs. In my game, I founded the first religion well before anyone else, in part thanks to Desert Folklore, but something like four other civs apparently opened with Piety and got Reformation beliefs while I was still finishing off Tradition. Those seem too powerful to resign yourself to picking through what's left, but you're still in pretty good shape if you get first pick of all of the other beliefs.

On the plus side, barbarians seemed a bit more numerous and aggressive, which gives more opportunities for Pictish Warrior faith kills without going to war, especially since it's more worthwhile to research Bronze Working early on. And the Ceilidh Hall is as good as ever.

Maybe there's just no iron around you

I wish. It's an actual issue, though. The iron gets revealed w/ Ironworking, and the game doesn't actually claim otherwise (has iron revealed w/ ironworking in the tech tree, everything.) Anyway, not a huge deal, just a little irritating.

There was a discussion here on CFC earlier and it seem people with macs still get iron at iron working (and at bronze working in PC)
