I am having quite an issue using the search function on this site .... How can I switch to a new team mid-game?

If you mean switching to another civilization (singelplayer) you have to use a mod allowing this. Recommend AdvCiv or Rhyes and Fall (Dawn of Civ). There are probably more mods out there with that, also.

I do, but I can't recall the buttons to use to do so ...

There are no buttons as far as I know. Do you use a mod? Look in the creation and customization section, especially the one mentioned in previous post.

If you haven t checked "lock modified assets", open the worldbuilder, save. Then load the wb save as a scenario.

Alt+Z to take control of the player in the next slot, Alt+Shift+Z for the previous slot. This shouldn't require any mods, just the cheat code. The Change Player mod also has that functionality through Ctrl+Shift+L. (Ctrl+Shift+P for changing the civ or leader of the currently controlled player.) I don't know how to join another team with the current player.
