If you know you are about to declare war on another civ, try doing this:

Just before you declare war, trade all of your opponents gold to you in exchange for a higher amount of gold per turn. They will accept, and then you get the money on a promise. Now, declare war. This will make your promise void, leaving you with no less gold coming in per turn than you had before. Meanwhile, your opponent is going to be penniless, and fighting alone against your awesome army.

No need to thank me.

That is exactly what I do... you can do same with luxuries. I did that to the aztecs. But won't the other civs catch up on this and not trust u no more?

Yea, I think this ruins your reputation which can mean death for you later on. I think that all deals you have going with a civ, prior to declaring war with them, count against your reputation.

Yep, if you enter a trade agreement, you have to wait 20 turns before you declare war or it hurts your reputation. However, if you play shrewd diplomacy, you can get the AI to break their trade agreements, helping you go for a diplomatic vitory or helping you isolate civs so you can get better trade deals in the future.

If you get all your opponent's gold right before you take his cities, you won't "liberate" any. But maybe trading for all his gold will hurt his war effort; I don't know.

Personally, I think if you're amassing troops on the border anyway, it would be better to sell a border city or two of yours for his gold. Your guys are right there to retake it, and you don't break trust...I think....
