Can anyone explain why a unit from another civ appears right next to my second city a few turns into a new game when the parent civ is miles away?
Do AI units get to move super-fast or something?

How far is "a few turns in" and what kind of unit is it?

well i had 2 cities and the first thing i built was a settler. It was a scout i know they move two turns but it was miles from america. Anyway Im giving them a good kicking for it as we speak ;)

By the way, does reputaion exist in civ3? How do i know what my standing is with other civs? THNX

30 tiles away is a lot farther than you'd think. A standard map is 50 tiles tall.

No they do not get to move super fast. some units get to ignore terrain, but standard scout do not. The scout has no offense, so no need to kill it, unless you do not want them exploring your area.

It will lead to war of course. There is a way to get faster movement, but you need techs that they will not have yet. Namely, RoP lets the other civ use your roads and get full movement. So early, roads are not up and RoP's are not available.

There is rep in Civ 3. You normally check it by offering the AI one gpt for 1 gold. If they don't accept it, your rep is broken. (Don't actually ask them if they accept, look at the Foreign Advisor)

Gold per turn. (or just "per turn" on the diplo screen)

oh right i'll have a go and check that. Can you repair reputation, or does it last for ever like in civ2 when you killed a spearman back in 3000bc a civ tells you that your betrayal is legendary etc etc

Killing stuff doesn't ruin your rep. Breaking per turn deals does.

Sneak attacks too isn't good for rep. I think when you sneak attack another, you will never be able to get rop.

But sneak attacks should not matter very early in the game since you havent encountered any other civs so there would be no one else knowing about it. Think about it. If your one of two people left on the world and the other guy attacks you, who you gonna tell about it in order to ruin their reputation. doesnt make sense. And why use a sneak attack against someone when you can use sheer force against them.

If you sneak attack/ROP rape a civ that has no contacts with others - and wipe it out - the other civs won't know about it. No harm to your reputation. If you don't wipe them out, when they "meet" other civs, they'll rat you out. Rep shot.
