I'm new to Civ, I just got it with BTS. Most of my wars start after 1000AD. Is this normal?
Anyway I do want to learn what chop rushing is and how to do it.
Any references or guidance will be appreciated.;)

Tech bronze working. Find copper. Build a city next to it if neccessary. Mine it, resaerch the wheel and link it to your cities if neccessary. Build axemen everywhere, chopping down every forest square you can in order to get them faster, plus throwing in a few slavery whips. Then, when you've got a good sized stack, go and take out an AI.

You are combining two items. Chopping is a method to rush production of any item by chopping down forest tiles (after you have researched bronze working). Rushing is attacking an opponent after producing multiple units but it does not necessarily mean that you have to chop forests for the increased production. As PhroX said, you can also use the whip (converting population to production if you are in the civic Slavery which is also available when you have researched bronze working) to produce units faster. Normally, the units that are used in a rush are axemen since they are available after you have researched bronze working and have copper connected, but you can rush with any one of the early units such as warriors or chariots.

A good guide for the early rush was written by Sisuitil and is here:

Why do you both speaking of axe-rushing?

Chop-rushing is just about rushing production by chopping trees; for that, you research bronze woking, take a worker, put it on a forest square, and click on the chop button: that will after 3 turns (on normal) delete the forest and give some hammers to the nearest city.

What you rush with it is a complete other point, is it not ?

Well, the general meaning of rush is to get lots of units and attack someone quickly. So chop-rushing would therefore mean a rush fueled by chopping. And axemen are the usual units for rushing - easily available and pretty strong, hence the obvious choice for this tactic.

That is an awesome guide- thanks for linking to it, nbcman!

That's not unusual. Not everyone plays the game like a warmonger. I generally don't start waging wars until then either.

Basically it's just chopping down the Forests in your city radius. You get a certain amount of Hammers per chop once you research Bronzeworking, more if you also have Mathematics.

It's not a bad idea to save a couple of tiles though, since having two Forest tiles means +1 health. Later you can convert one or both to a Lumbermill for some extra Hammers. Plus with BtS you can convert them to Preserves which make 1 citizen happy for each one you have. I try to have one of each myself, Grassland Forest for the Preserve and Plains Forest for the Lumbermill.

Essentially it is used for a short boost to your production, so you can conquer your enemy when he's not ready.

You can use it for all sorts of reason, not just militarily. It's a great way of getting up a bunch of cities early in the game. With chop rushing you can get a Settler built in no time. And it can really help in Wonder production as well, or adding some key building like a Forge or Library.

Success! I've just completed my first successful rush. i don't think it can actually count in that category, as it was quite late, around 400BC, but by my standards that's like lightning quick. It had plenty of chopping involved, and it was highly gratifying razing almost all of Williams pathetic dutch cities. Thank you everyone, for your help, and Sisiutils guide is really incredible.
