Gods and Kings, with its new features begs the question of what would it be like to experience life as a citizen in your empire? The last time this element even came to my mind was in call to power.

Call to power made all games since feel kind of empty toward the end game, because ctp was big enough the end game could happen early, or the civ 5 end game could be just the beginning. This creates more "age" in each era that allows frankly more role-playability - which brings it back to the life of a citizen. Are your people depraved and miserable? are they wild and free? proud or ashamed of their gods and kings?

While most people, especially in civ4+ have discounted this element (whip the slaves, flame people who look for more ethical ways to win) this looks like winning is more of a path and less of an outcome.

I agree, I'm more about the role-play abilities, (despite having strategies for each victory.. not sure why) but when I play hot-seat against myself I am ALL about role-play (to some extent, primary reason why I miss Apostolic Palace)

So, I'd say my people are mostly happy, rich, luxurious, living in an advanced nation (Yay Cheiftain!) the only issue is when a new architecture race (wonder) begins, some cities tend to starve (Production Focus tends to make my people starved because they work the Hammer tiles instead of Food).

I was just writing an email about part of this topic. I was thinking about how so many RPG type games have become mathematical exercises to maximize potential. When I played Skyrim, it was really disappointing to see so many people on discussion boards talking about the math behind the skills. I like to play Civ V with a leader and plan in mind regardless of which x will be the best every time. I find myself struggling against the math. I like to RP... it's more fun. Anything to add to that experience is great.

I enjoy role-playing my civ games too, but I'm the ruler. I have no qualms with using the citizens of my empire as a commodity. I try to keep things peaceful. I control the ecomony with Order. My people may not lead particularly free lives, but they are secure.
