City and Unit limits

Has there been any info as to whether the code in Civ IV will allow more than 512 cities? I like very large maps and this is a limitation I hope they got rid of. Also there was a limit on the number of units in CivIII. I think it was 4096 or 8192. Can't remember which.
Anyways, I'm just wondering if there has been any mention of this around here. :scan:

I don't think there will be any limits. I think it comes with the Hard Coded stuff (which is being taken out), but I'm not sure.

I just thought about this but has anyone taken a close look at the screen shots, there are a few where it looks like there are three or four cities on a spot that if it were Civ3 would hold a ton of cities

I don't think it will matter too much, because we won't have really large maps in cIV anyway, because of the new 3D engine. That's fine with me, though, because I rarely play on anything larger than 'standard'

I don't want to trigger a map size debate again, but I think the unit size issue and the city issue could be solved by modding the base terrain size (improvements etc. scaled down). A world map is not any fun when you can only fit 3 cities or less in Britain.

I'm just hoping its easily done and the game mechanics can handle large maps.

There's always limits...sometimes they're bigger than others, but they are there. Let's just hope that we don't hit them.

I thought I remember reading that there was no limit. Maybe its just that its so high noone will reach it anyway.

Now that you mention it, searcheagle, I do recall Firaxis saying that city limits had been removed. Whether it's because of the smaller map sizes, or a change in the fundamental code, or whatnot. I've never hit the city limit before (even on huge maps) - I can't imagine having to deal with 512 cities!

I did once or twice in Civ 3 at the end of the game. However, then they bumped the city limits from 256 to 512 and never had it happen again. I guess I just play with too much water (60% or more water)

I don't care what they said, there will be limits; if only your virtual memory.

Do you really need that 513th city?
Obviously, you've never played a map like El Mencey's 362X362 world map.
Play that with all civs and that is an average of only 16.5 cities per civ.
Granted, most people don't play these size maps, but some of us do... :crazyeye:

Amen to that!
