City Nationality

Basically the nationality of a city is factored in by a couple of items.

1.Is the city captured from a rival civ?

If so then you will notice at first it will read something like German 1% and English 99%.

If your newly captured city produces culture from Wonders then it will slowly become more German.

If you have a border city and its new to your empire and cannot produce culture you will notice the nieghbor civ will have more of its people in your city.

2.Is it a newly settled city on a rivals border?

It is easy to absorb a new city for your enemy if they have an older city producing alot of culture. It is very important to keep an eye on the nationality and culture of your towns. You never know if it will revolt and join your nieghbor...

of course anything I missed I will leave up to the pros.

It could be trade routes also influence nationality. So if you are trading with another civ some of their nationality could rub off onto your city. Of course, this nationality could just be form being close to the city you have a trade route with. Sorry if that's confusing or incorrect.

It is just a weighted cumulative average of different Civ's cultural influence on the city tile. So your interior cities that have never had overlapping culture with other Civs are 100% your culture, while your border cities (where your cultural boundaries overlap each other) will have mixed culture. If I have 100 accumulated culture in the tile and my rival has 50, then that tile is 67% my culture and 33% his culture.

As far as I know, trade routes have nothing to do with it.

Knowing how work city nationality has few uses in a actual game; instead, the factors that matter most about city nationality are motherland unhappiness and the required 10% of our culture for drafting.

In regards to motherland anger, here's a nice oldie for exact understanding. Nice to know how the city will react after growth without mod advising us to be careful.
