Civ 1 DOS sounds on DOSBOX

First of all, I apologize if this problem has been addressed on another thread; I've googled this as exhaustively as I can and found nothing, however. If there is a solution already posted, please direct me to the relevant thread.

Anyway, I recently acquired a copy of the original Civilization for DOS, having been rather disappointed in the version that came with Chronicles (for me, it seems to crash often and even still doesn't capture the feel of the original enough for me) and I've emulated it on DOSBOX. So far most of the setup has gone swimmingly - the game looks and plays exactly like the game I remember from my youth, when I'd play the game on a Tandy and have no idea what I was doing. However, there is one major discrepancy, and it's bothering me to no end - the sounds don't match up at all, most egregiously the combat. I'm willing to accept some minor differences in sound, but the combat is... well...

I recall the sound effects for combat playing exactly like they do in the Windows version of the game (and the version recreated in Chronicles) - however, in my emulated version, no matter what I choose for audio settings, the combat sounds like someone tapping on a cymbal that hasn't been unclamped (a faint, tinny tapping) which is almost identical regardless of victory or defeat - hardly the triumphant fanfare or mournful dirge I expect when pieces die on either side.

I've tried a few things to try to improve the situation - I've run the game under each sound setting I can think of, at one point I tried a sound patch of sorts which didn't address the problem but made all the other sounds in the game sound a bit better (if, again, different), and I've adjusted my DOSBOX conf; specifically, what audio device I'm emulating (tried, for example, setting it to Sound Blaster 1 under the reasoning that perhaps CIV didn't support SB16).

At this point, I'm frustrated enough that I don't know what to do anymore, though I freely admit I'm a rather novice DOSBOX user and as such, there could easily be a setting I haven't tried or a combination thereof. To help anyone interested in aiding me, I'll be posting a link to a pastebin showing what my current DOSBOX settings are; if anyone knows a combination of settings that would work better, I'd be eternally grateful for the assistance.

Thank you,
Eniliad

Hello, and thank you for replying! I downloaded the driver and ran it, and by default it was set to MIDI, 330, and 5. I haven't fiddled around with the settings yet (about to) but while overall sound in the game was vastly improved, when I won a combat round, it sounded... somewhat like someone taking a rapid breath. Is there an optimum setting I should set either DOSBOX or the patch to?

Your best bet for proper sound effects is Sound Blaster 16 emulation. The music will sound worse, however.

Also you can try DosBox ver. 72. I found that later version have problems with sound on my Win 7 x64.

Morgan Black has right. Also you can try DosBox ver. 72. I found that later version have problems with sound on my Win 7 x64 too. and idos emulator on mobile have problems sound not good.

Hey folks, resurrecting this long-dead thread because I forgot about it... then went off to training for six months. Having come back from a LONG haitus, I've once again revisited the DOSBOX issue after upgrading to x64 Windows 8 caused me to be unable to play the Windows version of Civ I.

So yes, I am doing this for a reason, not just so I can post to an old thread for kicks.

Anyway, I've gone ahead and tried both using the audio patch linked, as well as both DOSBOX 0.74 and 0.72. Neither appear to be solving the issue. However, I have decided to use the video capture option on DOSBOX to capture the exact audio problem I'm having with the game. You can view it here:

I am using custom audio, with the driver set to the Sound Blaster option, Address 220. If anyone can offer some further support (I know it's long after the fact, but I'm hoping there are still some retro gamers who can help out) who may be able/interested in helping out.

Much appreciated,
Eni

Which sound driver are you using?

EDIT: Missed that you specified the custom option. So I assume "Sound Blaster" means "Sound Blaster 16" configured with the custom sound driver and not the original "Sound Blaster" option.

Does D-Fend use different sound drivers or make it easier to configure or...?

Hi again,

Very easy to configure, but unneeded. It is preconfigured for many dos games - CIV included. Simply drag the Civ folder or as zip file of it onto the D-Fend Reloaded Interface and it will immediately appear on the menu. Everything automatically configured.

Select it and play. Simple as that. I have not come across a piece of software not running in there.

Easy to install too - no problems at all.

Oh, I almost forgot: When prompted to select the sound mode I select option 4) Adlib / Soundblaster for everything.

PS they do mention some problem with previous versions, but that was before I discovered it.

Well, I downloaded and tried running it, with the settings that you specified... it's not behaving any differently from if I had run it through DOSBOX myself... actually, I've noticed that with the 4 setting for sound, half the sounds seem to be missing anyway. But the combat still sounds as it does in my video.

Hey, it's been a bit; I'd just like to reiterate that I'm still having difficulties and would love it if anyone could get back to me with some ideas, either some config settings for DOSBOX or D-FEND, or something else to try, I'd appreciate it. :)
