First of all, I apologize if this problem has been addressed on another thread; I've googled this as exhaustively as I can and found nothing, however. If there is a solution already posted, please direct me to the relevant thread.
Anyway, I recently acquired a copy of the original Civilization for DOS, having been rather disappointed in the version that came with Chronicles (for me, it seems to crash often and even still doesn't capture the feel of the original enough for me) and I've emulated it on DOSBOX. So far most of the setup has gone swimmingly - the game looks and plays exactly like the game I remember from my youth, when I'd play the game on a Tandy and have no idea what I was doing. However, there is one major discrepancy, and it's bothering me to no end - the sounds don't match up at all, most egregiously the combat. I'm willing to accept some minor differences in sound, but the combat is... well...
I recall the sound effects for combat playing exactly like they do in the Windows version of the game (and the version recreated in Chronicles) - however, in my emulated version, no matter what I choose for audio settings, the combat sounds like someone tapping on a cymbal that hasn't been unclamped (a faint, tinny tapping) which is almost identical regardless of victory or defeat - hardly the triumphant fanfare or mournful dirge I expect when pieces die on either side.
I've tried a few things to try to improve the situation - I've run the game under each sound setting I can think of, at one point I tried a sound patch of sorts which didn't address the problem but made all the other sounds in the game sound a bit better (if, again, different), and I've adjusted my DOSBOX conf; specifically, what audio device I'm emulating (tried, for example, setting it to Sound Blaster 1 under the reasoning that perhaps CIV didn't support SB16).
At this point, I'm frustrated enough that I don't know what to do anymore, though I freely admit I'm a rather novice DOSBOX user and as such, there could easily be a setting I haven't tried or a combination thereof. To help anyone interested in aiding me, I'll be posting a link to a pastebin showing what my current DOSBOX settings are; if anyone knows a combination of settings that would work better, I'd be eternally grateful for the assistance.
Thank you,
Eniliad
