Sorry everyone but i am a complete novice... and only just got the bug... but been playing almost solid for the last 3 days since getting this great game... as such i have a few really dumb and basic questions (for which i apologise, i have looked for answers but not found them)... so here goes...
I have civ 3 complete (3 diff cd's) - when i play is it all rolled up into on game or do i have to do something different to 'play the world'?
I started a few times but keep running into the same problem - in sometimes up to 3 cities not enough population, no production and so all building/training stops in that city... no idea how to get it going again...
And i keep running out of gold... i close down research (dumb i know), try to increse the numbers of workers i have, keep building improvements... but nothing improves the diff between income and expenditure...
Help the newbie idiot please, its a great game and i learn fast...

Welcome to CFC, morganblackcrow!

First of all, if you simply pop Disc 3 into the 'pooter and play, then you're playing is Civ 3 Conquests, which is the final expansion of the game. (And not to be confused with The Conquests, which you can also play.) I'm not sure how you go about playing PTW (Play the World), as I've never done so.

If you to go the main game screen (where you can see lots of the map, and move units around), is there smoke coming out of the top of the city? If so, you have civil disorder, which is caused by having more unhappy people than happy. Try turning up the lux slider (go to F1, and look for the happy face slider in the upper right corner) or hooking up some luxuries. You can also make someone an entertainer, but that's not usually the best route.

Without looking at a save, it's hard to know exactly what you've done. Post a save and someone around here can take a look. (Don't worry, they're usually pretty gentle with newbies.) I'm going to hazard a guess that you've built every building that you can, haven't built enough roads, and the usual mistakes that we see in the "newbie needs help" threads. (Mind you, those are the exact same mistakes that I made, too.)

To play PTW you need to find the folder where you have civ III and load PTW that way.

Aabraxan covered your questions well but...

Posting a Save is the best way to get help with your games. To post a save you hit "reply" and then scroll down below the text editor to the "additional options" section and hit "manage attachments". From there you pick out your save file (usually in the conquests folder in a folder called "saves") and hit upload. Then give us a little background about the game in the text field.

thanks guys... i want to attach a save... but i cant seem to find any 'saves' in the conquests folder... i am still having to put cd1 into the drive to get the game working so will that affect where the saves are kept? i will keep trying to find the saves and come back as soon as i work it out :scan:

What operating system are you using? This can affect the location of saves. On windows 7 they are somewhere funny and you have to show hidden files to see them or something. Try searching for ".sav" files on your computer.

its windows 7... and did a search for .sav files and nothing from civ3 turned up... tried to attach screenshot but it wouldnt upload lol really not going well for me today hey... thanks for all your help, i will see if i get any further tomorrow :)

You have to put in a cd to play, unless you have a modified exe or some app to make it a virtual CD. This one of the methods used to prevent or attempt to prevent people from coping games.

There should be a folder with the exe for C3, PTW and C3C. There may be a shortcut already. You can create a shortcut to any of them and move it to have easier access.

Using a shortcut means the game will come up and ask for the appropriate Cd for that version.

There are some lets play civilization III vids on You Tube that cover the very basics. You can get some of that information from the War Acad with threads like Crackers Opening Moves.

This goes over details in how to determine what your first move should be be with your worker. Basically it explains how to evaluate tiles and why you would improve one and in what way (irrigate or mine or road).

If you are broke at three towns there could be anarchy as was mentioned. That means no production is available in that town that turn. It could be enough to break the bank, if you had no gold on hand.

You want to try to have each town be self sustaining. They have to be for food, but should be for gold as well. It is fine to run short for a few turns for some things like faster research or a war effort.

If you build structures in towns that cannot pay for them at that point, it will have to be made up by antoher town(s). The best thing is to try to build structures that make sense in that town at that time.

IOW a lib in a tundra town that is corrupt may not be useful and may never be useful. A lib started in a new town, may be bad thing now, but a good thing in 20 or 40 turns.

Like all things this is situational. I may require that temple or lib to get culture, but not need that happy from the temple or not be able to generate enough beakers to make the lib payoff.

A lib may not payoff right now, but later make sense when the town has more citizens. You can determine that by how important are the extra beakers and how many will I get for the maint?

It is 50% of the net beakers, so if I only net 2 beakers it is not a bargain. Once I get 8 or more beakers net, it ill be worth it, provided all other things are in place. That is to say the shields for the lib are not need to make a settler or a worker or a unit.

Look at some of the training games to find what players do each turn and how to evaluate your empire. The main thing other than fun, is to expand, expand.

Search should be *.sav to find any regardless of the name as long as the type is sav.
