I have been doing some searching and I don't seem to be able to find how to run Civ 3 in windowed mode.

Anyone have any ideas?

I've already tried the -w, -win, and -windowed in the Target field of the icon properties. *sigh*

Civ3 does not have a Windowed Mode. It is designed as a Full-Screen Only game. Simple.

(Yes, if you tweak resolution settings in the ini file, you can get a sort-of "pseudo-windowed" mode, but it really isn't that good. It is usually easier to just "Alt-Tab" to other programs.)

Besides, I guess that a windowed mode would consume too much system resources to run.

It doesn't run in windowed mode because they didn't give it that ability. Anyway, to run it in semi-"windowed" mode, do this:

Edit your civilization3.ini file (or PTW/C3C equivalent) and add these lines:

Video Mode=1024
KeepRes=1

yes, Video Mode should be 2 words. Now, change your resolution to something higher than 1024x768. You should see your desktop (or parts of it) when you play.

I just hit the windows key: can go to the desktop, can player poker, make mods or surf the net between turns. I just adjust the size of the windows I'm working in and the can see the game behind. If something intense is happening in the game I just bring the game to the front.

I know that Civ isn't in a window that is resizable, but the other games, browsers, paint programs are in resizable windows.

So leave Civ as the background or bring it to the front as required.

I wouldn't mind it being only in full screen mode, but I DO wish the computer's clock would show somewhere. I'll be playing, thinking it's about 11pm and I ought to get to bed, finally check the time to discover it's 3 or 4 am. Yikes!!! I always play in a darkened room.

I know that, buddy. Just keep a watch with you, so at least you cannot blame your total lack of sense of time on you failing to hand in some important lab reports.

I have one of those old fashion battery powered clocks with the hands, in the same room as my computer. Works great even in a power outage! :p

(Though when I'm playing Civ3 it's always "just another hour won't hurt")

qwertysoft had a program that did something like this. He just changed his name, tho, so finding it in the utility program section of creation and customization might be a challenge. I don't remember what his new name is, Xerol or something like that.

But if you go to www.snapfiles.com and search in the freeware section for 'clocks' you can probably find something that would stay on top all the time. I've messed around with world clock, but not while trying to play civ.

I can relate to the not knowing what time it is and 'just one more hour' statements for sure...

I'll be playing along think its like 9, really its 1... then its like okay... school tomorrow, one more hour wont hurt. Alright its 5 oclock now.... i am too tired to keep playing, i guess i can go to bed.

Y'know, Ainwood could always put a clock on the popover screen of CivAssist!
