Well, it was buggy and crash prone, but then EVERYTHING Firaxis makes is like that so I don't know why anyone was suprised to find Civ3 any different.

Of course it didn't! This game is a HUGE step back from SMAC. The only improvements civ3 has over AC is culture and the lack of hundreds of menus.

Hmmm... Originally i was extremely dissatisfied with Civ III and found Civ II to be a far more versatile game. In Civ II, starting locations were accurate (without having to use a scenario--you could use a map of earth), and the editor with Civ II was far more versatile. In addition, after playing SMAC, i thought it would be quite obvious that Civ III would incorrporate many of the diplomatic functions of that game. i mean, it simply seemed an obvious advancement. When i first played SMAC, i even thought to myself that i could not wait for a Civ III to come out as i just automatically assumed it would have a very similiar, and advanced, diplomatic capability. However, this was not the case, even as Firaxis applauded the "diplomatic advancements" of Civ III. In my opinion, these "advancements" are quite shallow and all gum drops. It is extremely annoying, for example, that If you engage in an alliance with another civilization, you must continue the war for 20 turns. If you declare peace, then you break your treaty with the nations you have created an alliance with. In addition, you don't have the ability to intervene, as you did in SMAC, to get another nation to lay off another by asking them to declare peace. i have read much about how the creators of this game have repeatedly stated that they didn't want it to be a "war game". However, without these extended diplomatic options, the AI acts crazy, and all you end up with is war. The alliance function is a complete step back from Civ II in that you can only have an alliance against another nation, and as soon as it is declared, then war starts out. i have not read anything that suggests that PTW will correct this crazy behavior. Although i have come to appreciate the game more, and find myself up many nights with it, i have yet to have as much fun out of this game as i did Civ II and find it quite shallow in comparison... although it looks quite pretty.
