Civ 3 Tournament Proposal

Oooops!! :o

I reread the thread and realized I was wrong in saying that the 1st system was ok in discouraging milking towards the end.. Just forget I said that.. :)

The goal of the scoring system was to make score and date both relevant, and do so in a balanced manner. Also we needed a way to compare and combine results from 4 different maps into one composite score for the season.

Judging just by score or just by date often cuts out valid skill areas. Building up territory and population (where score comes from) is just as much a part of Civ 3 as meeting a victory condition. Those who can combine score along with fast finishes in the most efficient manner will score best. Isn't that how it should be?

I really don't think the formula is very complex. It is rather simplistic even. If we go too simple though, there ends up being no real strategic difference between each player. Luck ends up being too deterministic once the players understand these simple gamestyles, as there is only one 'best way' of playing each map. The wider range of playstyles that we can support, the more decisions a player has to make about which path is best to pursue. A skill in and of itself.

For those worried about milking outscoring early finishes, I doubt it will happen if we normalize the turn percentage. The reason the MapSize modifiers are set the way they are is because score potential is directly linked to the number of claimable tiles. If milking falls short with a weight of 2 on a small/70% (~475 claimable)map, it will fall short with a weight of 1 on a tiny/80% (~216 claimable) map. This is because there are half as many tiles. And when milking, number of tiles is the limiting factor on potential score.

This seems like a nice idea, even though I fear that it will collide with the GOTM somehow. And I am also really surprised that so many people have so much time at their hands to take part in this.

But unfortunately I do not have this time, I´d like to take part in the Elite league but I cannot. Playing 2 GOTMs, a chess tournament and a starcraft tournament is more than enough to fill up my free time. I wish the days and hours would be longer!
Besides, I have a lot of work for my university studies, finishing 2 lab protocols per week as well as learning takes up another huge chunk of time. :p

One question though, is it possible to join at a later date? If yes I might do that in summer, if this tournament still exists then.
:D

Of course, now you need to make it clear if the players will have to have the new patch.

I would love to join in, but I just don't have the time to finish the game in such a short time. I'll probably download the game and play just to be able to see what you guys are writing about.

Good luck to you.

:shottie:

I'm in to play.

I'm probably the worst player to sign up :vomit: , but what the hell, somebody has to be. But I enjoy playing and I'm learning allot from reading what you good players have to say. Anyway, looking forward to it.

Great idea, I've just signed up... when is this tournament going to start? Will there be a message on the homepage or what???

I think that this just a great idea. and Iwoudl like to play in the regular division. I already sent an e-mail but have been having problems with it so here it is just in case. Let me knwo when we start and the rules.

Keep up the great work Grey Fox!

I'm not sure when to start the Tournament yet. It all depends on wether I get a job this summer or not.

In 1.21f it is very likely that utilities like chiefpaco's mapstat will not be able to be updated to work with the patch, at least until the compression algorithm is figured out. This would make the Domination limit very tedius to avoid, as it would require lots of hand counts of tiles. Accidently triggering Domination would be devastating to a players percent. How should we deal with this?

In games that are meant to play out somewhat quickly, having to figure out the Domination limit and keep track of your claimed tiles would slow things down. If we turn off the Domination victory condition (obviously only when Domination is not the required victory condition), milking gets a 33% boost in potential score, which would (further) imbalance the scoring system.

The initial thought I have is that the MapSize modifiers can be increased by 33% across the board, and Domination turned off. This should keep the MapSize modifiers balanced (or as imbalanced ;) ) as they currently are with Domination turned on.

It also addresses the questions raised by fRisKy to some degree as well. Milking will be further weighted against, not in regards to 'max' per turn score, but in regards to potential overall score. This is because the larger the land area to be developed, the longer the buildup stage will take.

Done at maximum efficiency, I would estimate any map will take at least 20 more turns to build up to max per turn score with Domination turned off (from a point of already owning 66% of the landmass). This is because the average time to double the number of cities is 15-25 turns in practice. You only need to claim half again as much with Domination turned off, so say 7-12 turns for expansion. It will take at least that much more time to build up the needed improvements with gold in what amounts to a totally corrupt 33% of the map. And then the fastest that a city will be able to grow to near max size (after an Aqueduct/Hospital are built) will take another 6+ turns. The last couple pop points taking considerably longer.

It isn't a big increase in weight against milking I admit. Probably only a % or 2 in practice. Any other ideas about how to deal with 1.21f's lack of a useable tile counter to avoid Domination? The other option that comes to mind is to allow reloading if and only if it is to go back a turn before Domination is triggered, and to not trigger it. This can still be somewhat tricky as well though, as often 1 turn back will only be able to avoid domination for so long. An unsellable culture producer (small or large wonder) near the coast or unclaimed land could eventually claim the tiles regardless of what the player did (short of disband that city). Disbanding the city could have a large effect on score if it were the JS Bach city or Cure for Cancer city for instance.

With the large number of players and only three divisions, perhaps you can come up with some way to rank the players in each division so the players that stay in one division and don't move up or down can have something to shoot for (especially the elite players).

I'm talking about ranking the players over the course of the entire tournament, not just round by round finishes. Having run multiple tournaments myself in other areas (not computer games), I could probably come up with some ideas if you need.

I've only skimmed over the entire thread so forgive me if you already mentioned this.

Oh and by the way, I own a web hosting company and do a lot of website design and programming. If you need any help, advice, or whatever in setting up a site for this tournament (or anything else), please let me know.

You can email me at andy@webtechosting.com

 The submissions are really pilling up.. Wow! Much thanks to ThunderFall for the promotion!

Perhaps it would be best to break up the submissions administration by division. 400+ submissions every 9 weeks could get very overwhelming for just one person. Each division administrator can be assigned to checking the save games from their division, and relaying that to the webmaster. Then the webmaster can produce the results pages.

Another Idea:

We might have enough participants to consider adding another division. Our original goal was at least 20 players in each division, both the Regular and Veteran divisions have doubled this already.

The main problem with the transistion from Veteran to Elite is the difficulty jump from Emperor to Deity. A player which can do reasonably well at Emperor might have little chance to compete on Deity. The jump is more like from Warlord to Emperor. A division combining Monarch and Emperor is much closer in playstyle than Emperor and Deity. The new top division could still do an Emperor/Deity rotation, or just a pure Deity division. Otherwise I could see a constant promotion/demotion cycle happening for some people able to do well on Emperor but not quite ready for Deity.

This new division would be aimed mostly at those in the current Regent/Monarch division who enjoy Emperor games, what do you all think of the idea? Are there 20+ who would want to participate in a Monarch/Emperor division? It could also help break up the submissions responsibilities even further.

I like this idea. Perhaps a system like the Global Rankings in the GOTM? A list for each Division, keeping track of the players percentage.

Now that we've got the people we need we need to settle on scoring and division movement policy. Then set a date for the first game. (Taking admissions through it all of course).

Well lets see what 2day has added. Grey fox tells us he has no idea when this will start. joy. fun. boo hiss. I dont know what the total # of players is at supposedly but ill tell ya what I think its at.

none
nada
zip
etc

Rules, format, divisions, so on so forth, nothing has been set decided or agreed upon.

we heard for the last 2-3 weeks we need more players.horsepoop. we got plenty o players to start. My grandmother had a saying "s**t or get off the toilet". Am i the only one that thinks this show needs to get on the road or get relegated to the realm of pipedreams?

If this thing doesnt really get off the ground soon, intrest is gonna drop like the hindenberg. If nothing else, lets get an all play game say at regent or monarch going so we can stack ourselves against the competition. The GOTM doesnt have as many submissions last month as we supposedly have participants. I dont see matrix waiting for more players. Hell the democracy game got off the ground quicker than this, and the y vote on everything from civ type to if the great leaders bladder is full.(oops wrong game :p ).

sorry to rant a bit ,but more playing less debating.

Hi Grey Fox:

I sent e-mail asking to join, but gosh only knows if you received it (gotta love MSN).

I'd like to take part in the regular division. I'll try sending e-mail again.

Thanks to you and Aeson for putting together such a cool idea!

Well, the reason I don't know when to start this is because I don't know wether I will have a summer job or not.

If I get the summer job I got last year I won't be able to be active on this site (no Internet).

And If I get a Job here where I live (moved here 9 months ago), I will be able to start it before summer.

And if I don't get a job I will also be able to start the tournament before summer.

Yeah, and maybe some medals for the fastest wins?

So basically everyone is on hold waiting for your job situation to clear up? Not trying to flame or offend here, and I hope you get the job you are wanting, but this situation calls out for more than one person to be coordinating it.

The idea should always be credited to you Grey Fox, but clearly it would take more than one person to administer the process to begin with, so I implore you to pass this idea on to a group of people you trust, and lets get it on the road while there is interest.
