I saw the message about playing Civ 3 under linux (with WineX) on the front page, but there is no discussion.

Has anyone tried it out yet? Does it work as well as they say it does? My linux partition is hosed right now, so I haven't tried it yet. (linux tip: be very frugal with the use of rm -rf when you are logged in as root).

If I could run Civ3 under linux, I wouldn't have to use windows for months at a time.... :goodjob:

another Linux tip, don't set the refresh rate and screen resolution too high for your monitor to support

I got Civ3 to successfully install with a standard build of Wine a few months back. The game loaded up to the main menu, but it would not actually load up a saved game or allow me to start a new game.

Seeing the screenshot on the transgaming website says that at least they are able to load up a game. I am guessing that they have it setup so that you can use the original game CD as well - getting it to just load under standard Wine required a patched executable.

I might pay the $15 for a 3 month subscription just to give it a shot. I will certainly post my results if I get around to doing it.

BTW, thanks for the tips. I too have :nuke: 'ed my system Linux a few times!
