First of all, i did seach for "debugger" on the forums, but no results.

Installed Civ 4 complete no problems, on Vista. But now when i try to run it i get the message "A debugger has been detected. Unload the debugger and try again"

Anyone know how to do this? And why is this even a problem with Vista?

Ive tried the amdsys.fix thing, but according to my search i dont even HAVE a amdsys.fix file...

Cheers

Yeah, ive done everything on there. Also turned off windows defender, tried changing compatibility, everything....

damn it vista, i just wanna play civ again :((

Shouldnt advertise it as working on Vista if it doesnt :(

in most cases it does work - and this is really a new (for me) error - so it cannot be all that common for this game or the error would come up more often in the Tech Support section.
did you install the game with administrator rights?

Yes, im the admin, and installed it all fine. These are things ive tried to remedy it, all with no luck:

1) Look to rename amdfix.sys, not there.
2) Updated all drivers.
3) Tried a clean boot
4) Ran ad-aware and spybot
5) Turned off all virus protection, inc. windows defender

Im guessing that one of my other programs is also a debugger, but i have no way of knowing which one it is. I heard nero could cause it, but could it just be as simple as uninstalling nero, then bang, it works?

being the admin is not the same as installing the game with admin rights in Vista - I'd recommend uninstalling the game then reinstalling by not using the autoplay feature, but rather opening the disc in windows explorer going to the setup.exe and right clicking on it, choosing run as administrator. Then do the same for the patch for BtS.

Nero could conceivably cause troubles but not with this error message.

I uninstalled, did exactly as you said, "run as administrator", installed it all....same result. Same error message.

Thsi is when just trying to run Civ 4. do i actually need the BtS patch for playing normal Civ 4?

Any ideas, other than what is listed on the Microsoft help page. I just reloaded everything, OS included and am now getting this message. I tried what MS suggested and did the clean boot, but I still get the message.

It's not MSE, I have that loaded and updated, Windows Update sure is taking its time getting current though. Everyday, at least 4 more updates to install. Hopefully I won't have too many more to go. That leaves the Physx and ThreatFire on my list of perps.

Hey there.

If any of you with the debugger problem is using Threatfire, that could be your problem. I've uninstalled Threatfire and now Civ IV is running like nothing happened.

In addition to Spybot and Ad-Aware, you might want to try Malwarebytes. I've run into 3 or 4 situations that it picked up on that Spybot missed. Ad-aware doesn't hit trojans/viruses at all, so I don't even use it.

Are you running inside a virtual machine?

If any of you with the debugger problem is using Threatfire, that could be your problem. I've uninstalled Threatfire and now Civ IV is running like nothing happened.

I took Jimbo1908's advice above and had the same positive results. I like
Threatfire so maybe I will reinstall it and not have it active when I play civ 4.
I have civ4 on another vista machine that doesn't have threatfire installed and it works
fine. It was driving me crazy. I should have googled the problem sooner.
