Civ 4 cuts all sound from my machine whilst running

When I run, Civ 4 or the Warlords expansion in Vista the program disables all sound on my machine during the load process. This includes if you run it in windowed mode and try to play an mp3 or listen to a radio station etc.

When I quit the program, sound is restored to the machine again.

I have tried switching "AudioEnable" in the ini file to 0 but no luck. Any thoughts anyone. I'm not too worried about getting the CIV sounds but I want to listen to the radio/MP3's whilst playing.

For information the exact time it happens is when it says "loading Audio" or whatever after the XML stage of the loading. So I guess whatever it's trying do upsets my Vista setup and blocks audio in some way.

Anyone had this/got a solution/suggestion?

Use internet radio or playing mp3 on your pc while playing civ4 will consume cpu time, thus make civ4 run slower.

I suggest you to use radio or mp3 player to play music, not through your pc.

Thanks for the advice but I've got 1.5gb of RAM and a dual core CPU so internet streaming/playing an mp3 isn't going to have too much of an effect. The game runs fine, no graphics problem or anything like that - the sound issue is clearly something non-performance related as a program should not disable all sound on the machine at Windowed startup.

Any more technical advice anyone?

Bump as it's annoying me froma technical point of view if nothing else

I have similar problem: sound start to buzz while Civ IV is loaded and all the time while I am in the game..i have onboard sigmatel sound card
