I've been reading a lot about civ 4, and some of the upcoming game aspect look good, like religions, civics, and 3D graphics. However, I also read that they are going to get rid of harder game aspects like corruption, waste, anarchy, pollution etc to attract more players. I realize this is better for the noobs, but does anyone else feel this is wrong? It seem too much like cheating to me. If they do take these things out, I may be sticking with C3C.

THough i completely agree with you sentament, i think this would better fit the civ4 ideas

All good games require a level of thought that most people today dont have. If they want to appeal to other players why not make it a on\off option instead of flat out getting rid of it

I've read that they will remove corruption/waste/anarchy/pollution also. Maybe the new stuff they add will make up for it. For the most part I don't mind these items but I won't miss them.

I agree!!!!

I'm going to wait for it to come out and have a few wins under my belt before I decide to be for/against Civ4. Maybe on paper some of the stuff they're removing sounds horrible, but who says they won't add in other challenging concepts? We just can't know for sure what the game dynamic will be like until we have it in our hands.

They call them the 'unfun' elements of the game. Bothers me that they are being removed too. The least they could do is base their existence on difficulty - add them in at the higher difficulty levels for the advanced players.

I think it's wrong to get rid of them. After all, we are managing an empire here. Besides, they really don't need to attract more players. They've gotten enough popularity to make a fourth game of the franchise haven't they? Not a lot of franchises make it that far.

Nobody said CIV would be easier. Just that elements of the game that were micromanagement intensive would be reworked or removed. Admit it, who like cleaning polluted tiles? Nobody. Does this mean that Soren will remove the concept of pollution in CIV? No, just that the implementation will be streamlined so that you have more time to do the fun things.

In addition, Soren has said that there will be new gameplay concepts added to fill up your new found time.

[pissed] [pissed] THEY ARE NOT GETTING RID OF THIS STUFF!!! [pissed] [pissed] they are changing them!!! they are 'getting rid of' playing "whack a mole" with polution, etc....

whoa! i have free time? i thought civ took it all,

I don't know about anyone else, I got it from Soren Johnson's GDC presentation , slide 59 (the same slide where he mentions adding religion and civics :) - two features I'm really looking forward to).

I saw it at some Civ 4 forum that I found thru google, and although the people there were saying they would be doing away with pollution, corruption etc I suppose I shouldn't have drawn the conclusion that they knew what they were talking about. I think I would like it if they had this stuff at higher difficulty levels, or if they simply changed the whole "whack-a-mole" concept, as ybbor would say. But if they take out the ENTIRE CONCEPT at any level of the game, I'm gonna be kind of dissapointed.

I don't think that cleaning up pollution is a particularly thoughtful exercise. "Oh god, okay, let me find some stray workers. Oh boy, I guess I can get him there in 3 turns. Which button is it to clean up pollution? Oh yeah, there we go."

What IS thoughtful is when players have a reason to be environmentally friendly, as if being an environmental nation has its own benefits. I'd like to think that the designers are smart enough to see this as important.

The same way we don't need rioting to encourage players to keep their people happy. They'll find something else to keep the strategy without forcing us to go in and play with population heads after a riot happens.

I certainly don't want pollution/corruption, etc, removed from the game. Changing the implementation I can understand.

Basically, in the end, I want Civ 4 to boast deep and varied strategies w/ minimal complexity and micromanagement. In other words, the Holy Grail of Strategy Game Design.

Volstag: As WS said, the goal is to reduce micromanagement as much as possible so you can have more time spent playing and less time spent making sure your cities won't riot or dealing with tiles popping up here and there that are unusable.

I would honestly take every micro issue out if it meant that you could play the game in multiple ways, but I might be an extremist that way. Ideally, I would like a balance between the Civ I know and love, and the Civ I thought it should have been all along -- one with multiple, independant paths to victory.
