Civ 4 has me in a Catch-22

I'm encountering a rather odd issue with Civilization IV. After I installed it, I tried to install Beyond the Sword. It tried to install patch 1.74, but failed, and aborted. I tried to manually install the patch, but it told me since I had already installed version 1.09 or something, it would not install. I uninstalled Civ IV, and it told me it required a version of Civ IV to work (obviously). I get the distinct feeling I'm missing something here. Help?

Here is what I reccomend: Uninstall the game, restart your computer, install the game, restart, then install BTS or the patch or whatever, but only make one change at a time between restarts. Restart after the last install phase before trying to play for the first time also.
