Civ 4 style markers?

Another noob question.

Is there a way to place sign markers on the terrain as in Civ 4, or do I have to use this funny memory thing?

Memory, unfortunately. It fails me so often in this game, they need to buff it.

This is something I miss as well. I used the signs and line drawing tools to mark battle lines and plans, primary targets and all sorts. Looked like a Jackson Pollock time I'd finished with it.
