I am having a similar problem - slightly different circumstances though. I had Civ4 "Game of the Year Edition" installed on my computer, then received the "Complete Edition" for Christmas. I first attempted to uninstall the "GotY" edition, and got the following error:

Error Code: -5004 : 0x80041f42

Then I thought there might be a chance I could just install the Complete Edition as well, which seemed to work - however when I boot it up, it will only open Colonization. In addition, when I decided the experiment had failed and tried to uninstall the Complete Edition and start again, I received this error message:

"String_IDS_UNINSTALL_GAME_RUNNING was not found in string table"

Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

***Update: got the Complete Edition to uninstall by removing the CD from the drive. Still cannot get the GotY edition to uninstall.

Welcome to CFC :band:

the fact that it only started Colonization via the autostart menu was by design - you need to use the shortcuts it creates to start the other games.
As for Civ4: you could remove it manually - do you know anything about registry editing?

I know you access it via Run -> regedit. Which registry files have to go bye-bye?

Also, when I installed the complete version it didn't create any shortcuts, nor did there seem to be any of the appropriate files to create shortcuts in the installed files. Perhaps that will be different on the second install.

on XP it should have made shortcuts (on Vista and 7 it fails to do so since the operating system wants them done differently).
are you just trying to remove Civ4? or the Complete edition? for Civ4 all keys with firaxis / Civilization in their name and the two keys that include:
CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8
should go.

I had the same exact situation and problems and went in to change the registry problems, and it let me uninstall Civ4 but then when I went and installed Civ4 complete edition it wouldn't let me play it but Colonization works just fine. I go right into the Firaxe game file but nothing is there at all and when I search my computer its like Civ4 complete edition doesn't even exist yet it says I installed it...I'm not sure if I accidentally got rid of a registry that was needed but I'm lost, confused and at the end of my whits. Would greatly appreciate it if someone could help. (I do have Vista btw)

The "Game of the Year" edition has a broken setup file. Attempting to uninstall using add/remove programs will always fail.

You will have to manually remove the files and registry entries. Alternatively, you can use a third-party uninstaller program. I did this and it worked great. Unfortunately, I forget the program name. It was good and free, though. ;)

Wooo, finally got everything to work!

I used Revo Uninstaller (which is free) to delete the "Game of the Year" Edition, along with all the registry files and remnants, then installed the complete edition and it works perfectly.

glad it works :)

what operating system is this?

Yes, Revo Uninstaller is the program I used. I have never had to use an uninstall program before and this one worked great for the Civ 4 GOTY edition.
