The new expansion is good. Civ 4 should really go beyond the sword.

My computer is about 23 years old,. I play large world and 8 civs and game is very snappy for me. I have 1 gb ram and 256 graphics card.. The average new computer...even a cheap laptop... will handle the game perfectly.... No need for the 2d option... If you want 2d go for civ3

How much did you pay for a computer that old with such processing power?

Ok, I was wrong. Nice to hear that another expansion pack. Hopefully they think something about optimization in vista. Of course, bug fix as well.

My PC that's 4 years old with a cheapy GeForce graphics card plays CIV fine, apart from the increased time it takes at the end of the turn for the AI to do the other civs' moves.

Nowadays you couldn't find a machine that wouldn't run CIV in the shops - although at the very bottom end you'd probably want to have at least 1Gb of RAM.

And anyway, the whole point of a graphics card is that most of the 3D stuff is done in that, not in the CPU. Going back to 2D wouldn't make that much difference.

The expansion pack looks awesome. I don't grok "Advanced Starts", though:

A major fan request, this new feature will enable players to 'buy' components of a custom-tailored empire and begin play in the later part of the game, allowing them to experience many of the new features of the expansion in a shorter amount of time.​

How would that play out?

I think if they could make a setting for 3d or2d that would solve problems but the zoom would be different for the 2dness
