Civ 5 locking up while scrolling across map

Smells like Civ 5 has some sort of graphical memory leak. I started a huge Pangaea map and game performance was fine at first, but as more of the map got revealed the performance began to decrease until it simply locked up.

At first it would simply take a bit longer to render the tiles when I scrolled from one part of the map to another, but then it locked up completely. My computer does not crash, the game itself simply locks up and I have to quit the process from the Task Manager.

This happens without fail after a random number of turns (seems to depend on how much I scroll, zoom, etc...), but only after a large portion of the map has been revealed. I have tried changing all the graphics from high to low and back again. I have changed the resolution of the game, as well as trying both windowed and full screen mode. I have also tried playing immediately after rebooting. If anything, my efforts simply delay the onset of the lockups.

System Specs -

Dual Core CPU, 4gb RAM, Nvidia Geforce 9800 with latest non-beta drivers, Windows XP SP 3. I know the 9800 isn't the latest card in the lineup but it certainly should be fast enough to run Civ 5 on lower graphics settings. I will paste my DXDiag below.

Any suggestions that I might have missed? Or should I simply run smaller maps until a patch is released?

I am having exactly the same problem, the later the game the more frequent it seems to happen. graphics freeze, normally when scrolling across cloud (unexplored area). task manager shows game is still running but is completely locked up

PS Tried the latest beta from Nvidia and no improvement

Already tried the latest beta driver?

I have not yet tried the latest Beta drivers...I am not a big fan of Betas since they can introduce more problems than they fix. :) I'll try it tonight though and see if it helps.

Same exact problem here happening under similar scenarios (late game during my marathon games during the scrolling)

Very annoying and now having to save every 2 turns because it's so volatile and can lockup at any moment during a scrolling event.

I had similar symtoms, the size of save game files seemed to be my problme.
I now always exit to windows and restart before loading any game.

Wish that were the case here, my filesizes never exceed 1.2mb though and they are pretty consistent. Now on Turn 950+ and still having this issue. If I start a new game it's blazing fast and responsive again, but over time I'm sure it would do the same thing. My 950+ game takes almost 2m to load and is not extremely responsive during the turns compared to a new (or less than 600-700 turns) game which runs lightning fast in comparison. There seems to be this magic point where you will then be plagued by slowdown for the remainder of your game if it gets too complicated for too long. I'm guessing a memory leak they need to take care of.

Also Nvidia beta drivers made no difference here. I believe they need to patch for the issue to be resolved and there are many others with this problem so hopefully it will get attention soon.

I have the same problem as well. I have a 8800 GTX with 4 megs of system ram so I don't think it's a problem with me meeting system requirments and such, seems more like a memory leak as the OP suggested. The only way I can play the game after having explored a large section of the map is to play it in DX 9 mode. This stops the game from locking up but instead I get texture pop-in later on in the game (this is a lot better than the game freezing!). There may be an issue with Direct X11 and DX 10 cards like the 8000 and 9000 series, I don't know. I really hope a patch will fix this soon.

I'm having the same problem. It has to be an nVidia issue, I have an 8800 GTS 512, I got the latest drivers, not the Beta though.

Yep, sounds like my problem, too. Cranking the video settings way down helps for a while, but the bigger the world gets, the slower it goes, and eventually it crashes.

I'm not even going to bother playing anything larger than standard, there's no point.

Any word from Firaxis about this?

I have an ATI 5870 also and It started crashing late game when lots of units were moving around. ATI updated their drivers like 9/24 so i just downloaded those hoping they help.

I have a 8800GTX and think I have found the problem. It seems the default settings the game is selecting are much too high. I lowered the resolution and took most things down to low and so far no crashes.

Not really a solution but just wanted to share the cause for lockups. If you want stability turn down well below the default settings.

This is a little late on the post since i just got the game but I have a geforce 8800 and had to select the active X 9 option before launching the game to avoid the crashes. If i were to select X-10/11 it would crash after a random number of turns.

I have this same problem too.

Core2Duo @ 3.2ghz
NVidia 9800GTX
8mb DDR2 RAM
1920x1200 monitor resolution

Exact same problems as OP described. If I play on anything larger than a standard sized map, as I reveal more and more of the map I eventually get the game locking up on me. It seems to happen when my screen gets pulled around from city-state messages (and my map is forced to jump half way around the world to center on the city state, quite an annoying thing if you have more than 10 or so city states I must say).

I assumed my CPU and card couldn't handle the larger maps. I play on DX9 with all settings on lowest possible. I also start getting some sort of weird re-draw where all of the tiles turn a bit gray and when my screen gets pulled around from unit cycling or city state cycling my tiles get redrawn from top of the screen to bottom. When that starts showing up that's when I know the lock up is coming.

I also see random CTD on standard sized Great Plains maps, I assumed it also was from a lack of raw computing power (perhaps crashing due to too much calculations from unit movement combined with massive power required to redraw map as it gets jerked around from unit cycling and city state message cycling).

I'm thinking of upgrading my machine to a new quad core i series chip and a 400GTX level graphics card (because I LOVE playing huge TSL Earth maps) but I'm worried it's a software problem and not a lack of hardware.

Is anyone able to play huge Earth (or equivalent) maps to the end? If so, what settings and what is your hardware?

Thanks! I'd love to hear it's something I can fix and not something I'll have to wait for the software devs to fix (because I'm worried that might take forever).

I had this problem, late game on a huge map. i7 960, 6GB W7x64, ATI5800 series, all settings high.

It froze exactly as you describe, I would have to re-start the game, reload and then could play a bit more before it did the same again. Dropping the graphics settings didn't seem to help.

I found playing in strategic mode for a few turns allowed me to switch back and finish the game normally without further problem.
