Hi,

I recently purchased Civ 5 and am encountering an extremely large number of crashes. If you search the Internet for "Civ 5 crash" I'm experiencing just about every one that is reported.

I have a relatively high-end computer: Core i7 (860), 8GB RAM, ATI 5850 video card with 1GB RAM, and 340GB HD space free on C: drive where I've installed the game. I have downloaded the latest video drivers for my graphics card using Steam. I have a cable Internet connection. I am using Windows 7 Professional (64 bit). Steam seems to think that it has downloaded all of the patches for Civ 5.

When I first installed and tried running the game it would not load (blank black screen before intro video loaded). I updated my video drivers and the game loaded and I was able to play a small game for over an hour. I then saved and reloaded the game later that day and it ran for about 6 hours. The next day I again had the problem of Civ 5 not starting and not showing the intro video. I found the hacks to run the game in Windowed mode and to skip the intro video; I had to use both before Civ 5 would run again.

I then found that I could not load the saved game (either my last save or any autosaves). I again found the hack of running in off-line mode with no access to the Steam cloud and loading from the Mod menu. The game would load but would crash after the first or second click on any unit.

I then tried creating a new game and it would crash while playing the starting audio while setting up the game. This occurred regardless of whether online or offline. I then found the hack to turn the Leader Video quality to minimum. This allowed the game to be created but again Civ 5 would crash on the first click of my mouse or movement of my mouse in the game window.

After about 7 hours of trying to debug and fix all of these problems I'm giving up. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing these crashes and what can be done to get Civ 5 to work?

I have also installed it on my laptop which is a Lenovo X200, a Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz with 4GB RAM and Intel's integrated graphics. This is also running Windows 7 Professional (64 bit). Despite being below the minimum specs for Civ 5 my son was able to play the game for about 8 hours, including several restarts and loading of a game, with no problems.
