I've noticed several things that make them very similar:

The ship's tight turns were also in pirates...

Terrain was similar in both...

Leadern look like the graphics used in Pirates...

Units look alike...

or is it just me?

Of course they are. The same artists worked on both games.

Learn 2 Upgrade? :D Anyone can build a decent computer for like a grand and thats upgrading -everything-. Games are more advanced these days so get with the times. :goodjob:

Both game use the same 3D graphics engine, i read from somewhere.

Both games crash on my computer and both games run much slower than they should have on my computer.

...

If the game crashes, that doesn't mean his computer isn't good enough to play it, that means the game is buggy...

That's why it was said before the release that you should check if Pirates! runs on your machine and only then consider buying Civ4.

Although, in the actual fact, Civ4 runs better on my system than Pirates! does. At least it supports 1680x1050 resolution which Pirates! never did...

Or you might need to upgrade the operating system or various component drivers. There are a lot of things to try even before you buy upgrades. One of the annoying things is a clean reinstall of the operating system, but sometimes this is the best thing to do.

I think both are just absolutely beautiful games. I don't have Pirates and I don't think I'll ever get it. But I'm loving Civ IV. :)

Yeah civ is very lazy and uses a lot of sound effects already made for pirates. Im not a fan of cost cutting like this :@P But other then that they are both pretty good games. Though pirates is lacking a lot of the things which should have been in and feels very much like a cash in.

I wouldnt be suprised if pirates was used as a test for the graphics for this game and to raise a little cash to pay the programmers. Companies work in strange ways now to pay for what they need.

Yeah, I asked about this in one of the chatroom qa sessions.. they were adamant that they were separate programs, but it just makes sense that they "borrowed" stuff from Pirates! In fact, in the month leading up to the game, I simply played Pirates! only to sack cities so I could get a feel for the combat system...

I bought Pirates! shortly after I heard of CivIV so I could check out the graphics and other features that might transfer over. It also gave me a good way to pass the time while waiting.

There are some similarities definitely. Movement in the city sack vs. unit movement, and the battle sequences in sack mode are very similar. I almost expected the diplomacy/trade menus to mimic the option list that you get when you enter a city in Pirates! In Civ V you will probably have to plant a spy in town in a similar fashion to sneaking into a city in Pirates!

Pirates work fine on my computer with no slow down

... and CivIV work fine too except for a little slow down and 2 times crash to desktop.

But two games are very great to me.

Never had any problems with Pirates! Lets hope it stays that way with Civ4.

And i dont mind that they use same graphics, graphics of Pirates are nice and funny, i dont see why everything has to be even more photo realistic, its sure nice but you loose the fun and it gets boring if every game looks the same, so Pirates/Civ4 is a nice diffrence to the current market.
