(Wow, this site is pretty amazing. I had no idea that people still played Civ I!)

Anyway, I have my old copy of civ that I used to play on a 486 with windows 3.1 in a DOS shell. I installed it on my Win98 and WinXP machines and the game runs, but the timing is very slow. Units blink at a painfully slow rate and everything happens slowly.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Is there a fix for it?

Thanks,
Mark

Wow, I'm surprised you even got it to work at all on XP! Since I upgraded from 98 to ME my floppy disk Civ1 doesn't work anymore!

It just gives me a divide by 0 error which seems to translate to "too old"

On 95 though I found that the game sped up if you picked PC sound instead of sound blaster, you could try that

Rob -

I'm floored. Your suggestion worked! I've never actually played civ with sound, so I always choose the "no sound" option. This time I tried "PC sound" and the game seems to respond normally. Pretty cool! FYI - I had already activated the windows compatibility check box by clicking properties from windows XP.

Thanks for the tip!

I have a windows copy of Civ1. If you want it (and if you've payed for the original one so we won't get banned for piracy) pm me. The game doesn't feel as authentic as the DOS one though.

Wow! That actually worked!
I installed the game on XP, but rarely played it because it was soooo slow, but now it runs almost perfectly, thanks for the suggestionn :goodjob:

I play civ I on windoze '98 and I have the timing-bug also. But if I play it long enough, sometimes it just snaps out it and becomes fast again. But if I restart it, it is slow again :(

Wow! I didnt realise that people hadnt tried that one before! I guess I'm the only one crazy enough to even play Civ with that beautiful bleeping sound

Glad to help
