I'm not going to debate which is better Civ I or II. I almost never started playing II because I didn't like it at first (compared to I), now that I'm used to it I can say, in most ways, its a big improvement on the original.

Still, Civ I is a beautiful game, simple yet with infinite possibilities, I first started playing at 13 (back in '92) and I was addicted like I was to no other game.

Ways in which Civ is better than Civ II...

(1) The Map Grid (the diamond grid is just unecessary)

(2) The graphics when you speak to AI's. I loved talking to Stalin or Gandi and they'd get pissed off and them and their followers would scowl at you.

(3) Caravans - its such a pain in the ass in Civ II to choose Beads, Gold, Coal, etc. Who cares, the new caravan system is needlessly complicated.

(4) The AI's military intelligence... Believe it or not, I think the AI was more challanging in Civ I, when they were at war with you they were really relentless. I remember playing the Indians (on Earth) and the Russians and Zulus coming after me like mad.

(5) The replay when you win! - What were they thinking when they got rid of the replay option, winning Civ II is like eating a good meal but with no desset.

Ways in which Civ II is better...

(1) Better Wonders - This is the main thing to me, the new Pyramids are great, Sun Tzu's war acad I like, and of course Leonardo's Workshop.

(2) Military - the new units really make for a more balanced game (in Civ I, the jump from Knights to Armors was just too much), also Engineers are cool.

(3) Combat - the new combat system is better than the dice throw you got with Civ I

(4) Mutltiplayer - I never did get to play a Multiplayer game in Civ I, its too bad, I'm sure it would've been fun

(5) The AI doesn't get "stuck" as much - Granted the AI is still pretty dumb compared to a strong human player but at least they rarely get stuck with one city like so often in Civ I (on Earth, the Romans, English amd sometimes Chinese rarely founded a 2nd city)

All in all, these are both great games. I am looking forward to trying Civ III.

Proudest Civ I moment... conquering the world (on Earth) as the Mongols around 1300BC (I remember I had to go all the way to Australia to wipe out the last replacement Civ). I think the difficulty level was King.

Take care all!

I agree with you on many things. Although the wonders in Civ2 make the game easier because they last for such a long time. But the combat system is really a huge improvement no doubt about that. If Civ had the combat system of Civ2 Civ would be much better.

.....and never tried Civ3.....

Shame on you for not at least trying it! SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!

What if you had never tried Civ1?

CFC would be unbearably quiet :)

Nice topic.

I started playing civ-1 when I was at a age of 10 (six years ago) And I am sure it is the best game ever.

I`t was one great voyage through time. I didn't understood how the Tax, Science and food rules were working.
I was so excited when I was attacking the zulu`s with my Catapults. And I remeber my first "big-city" when I was playing a game with the mongol, one of my cities reached size of sixteen. (I remember the name "BASRA" as my first love...)

Now (six years later) I am playing civilization (1,2,3) only in my summervacations, because I ****-up my entire social-life and school.

The only weak point of Sid Meier`s Civilizations is the social-life reducing aspect.)

(Sorry for my incorrect English)

That's touching Marx... a boy finding civ1 and falling in love for his first time.... i think I might cry......

:)

There is no question about it CIV1 is much better than CIV2 (This has only the advantage of the combat system...)

CIV1 is beautifull. Today, I play more CIV3 and Age of Empires (I & II), but to me CIV1 is like Super Mario 64 a mark (to me THE Mark) in the game Industry.

And this, I don't discuss it!!! :D

just got a disk of civ I this morning ,my other has been lost for yearss!
......but it is so confusing after playing civ II.
Lots of work ahead of me I see!

If you like Civ II you'll like Civ I, its almost guarenteed. On the other hand, if you like Civ I, Civ II still takes a bit of getting used to, I almost never started played it, though I'm glad I did.

I think CIVI is much better than CIVII. The key difference is democracy and railroad. You get faster democracy and railroad in civ1 then in civ2 and really faster in comparison to the other civilizations.

(wasn't there a thread like this before? :))

Anyway, I remember getting Civ1 (and RR Tycoon, and a few other games) "free" with my Sound Blaster/CD Drive that I bought. Opened the box, and there it lay. :) (Still had to pay $275 for the sound card and CD-ROM. :D) I even remember the first wonder the AI built - "Russians build the Great Wall - circa 2750" (somewhere around that year), and much later (in college), remembering the Civ1 science advisor, and how much she looked like my Physics professor! :D

Even building rails *IN THE WATER!!* (which seemed to solve the "you're people don't feel connected" problem). I built the "Siberian-Alaskan Waterway", and "Spain-Morrocco Pass", and the "Great Brazilian-African-Bridge", as well as rails hoping their way down to Australia.

-----

Building a new Computer system in 1991 - $1500
Buying a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Kit (plus CDROM Drive) that summer - $275
Finding Civ1 in the box - Priceless! :)

Cross country railroads are fun! I like building them in civnet to connect me with neighbors accross the map, it makes for a good little scare when you transport 100 tanks across the map into their territory when they thought you built the railroad for trade puposes :D

=P i started played the ENTIRE civ series since i was at least 9! of course i never knew what tax was back then either

Ive just got Civ 1 today, having played it a few years ago then foolishly getting rid of it, im not sure if I prefer it to Civ 2, always thought Civ 1 was better than Civ 2 but having played Civ 1 again im not sure, it is still an absolutely cracking game though.

I started playing Civilization a few weeks ago. I was going to start working on re-programming a game I'm developing sometime around the end of last month/beginning of this month.. but oddly I haven't even started yet.. ;P
