I have an Old OS 9 iMac that I use to play some of my old mac games on. And after dusting of the CD decided to reinstall and sit down to a game of Civ II but a couple of odd things happened with which Techs I could grab.
I'm running a fresh Large install of Civ II Version 1.0, It doesn't appear to be the Gold version as it only came with 2 Scenarios, Rome and WWII. Although I could be wrong as i don't have a clue about the release versions they did for the mac. I'm just pulling the info from "get info" and it just says 1.0 and the CD/Manual etc don't say anything about gold so I'm assuming not.
Anyway here is/are the issue(s). I started noticing pretty quickly that the Tech tree seems to be playing up.
Every time I discovered a Tech and get the option to choose the next tech I find I cant research some techs, even though I could previously and have the prerequisite techs.
For example, I was following a guides recommend Tech path and got to the Point at which I should learn Feudalism and even though it was an option previously and I had both Warrior Code and Monarchy I only had like 4 techs to choose form an one wasn't Feudalism so i had to pick another tech. I then started watching out for this and I did notice that I had very few techs to actually choose from and that I had decided i wanted Monotheism next but I couldn't even though again i had the prerequisites and it was even an option previously.
Too be perfectly honest this could have been the behaviour before when i used to play it way back when but i dumb and young then and always just picked the advisors pick and didn't pay attention on chieftain difficulty only lol.
So my questions are these
Should this be the correct behaviour? If so Why is that?
If not, is this a bug with this version and is there a patch?
To note I already tried the Mac Gold Patch but nothing i tried could get it to work ie renaming to "Civilization II Gold 1.0" or" Civilization II Gold 1.1" etc
On a side note can someone point me in the direction of finding out how may citizens a city can have before unhappiness strikes?
EDIT: I just read in the manual something about some techs not showing up but will at later points. If thats the case then I'm all good but if someone can just confirm thats the case.
