Civ II scenarios crash in Windows 8.1

Related to the other thread I've posted, I installed Mastermind's patch and the latest official patch for Civ II and have it working in Windows 8.1 - videos, high council, all good when I start a regular game. However, when I try to load any scenarios except for Rome or World War II, the game crashes. Any solutions to this? These are the Conflicts/Fantastic Worlds scenarios that are giving me trouble.

(rename the Sid Meier's Civilization II: Multiplayer Gold Edition folder to something shorter like "CivMGE" - the file path is too long!).
