Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I usually play Prince level because I'm not good enough for anything higher. I have tried to play at King level but I keep losing my units with messages like "London can no longer support horseman" etc. Can anyone tell me why please.

Welcome Trekkie,

Civ2 will disband your units if London supports more units than its shield production. For example, suppose London produces 5 shields per turn from workers on forests and plains etc. And it supports 3 horseman units (which means London created them, or you "homed" them to London at some point). When you look at the London city screen, you'll see the shield row split into 3 on the left (support) and 2 on the right (leftover shields, which add into your shield box each turn). That's OK.

But if you shift workers from forest to grass, so that London produces only 2 shields per turn (less than 3) that is a problem, and you will lose a unit. You can avoid this by re-homing some units from London to another city before the problem gets too serious. And check your city screen often, especially when you are making a settler (because the city will shrink then and lose shields).

You are producing too many shield-supported military units in your cities. Don't just set a city to produce Horsemen and leave it there forever. There are more valuable things you can produce in cities, like Settlers and Caravans, that will help grow your civ and advance your treasury and research. Look at the terrain around the city and decide whether to encourage the city to grow larger, which may need improvements like Harbor, Temple, Market.

FYI, the two sets of units that do not require any shield support are Dip/Spy and Caravan/Freight. The former can be used for scouting, making embassies, bribery and spying, and the latter can be used to create trade routes, get trade bonuses in gold and beakers, and contribute shields to Wonders and spaceship parts.
