Civ II vs. CTP

I've never owned Civ II but have CTP II, AC and C3C. I hear a lot of wonderful nostalgia for Civ II and some distress about CTP. Since Civ4 isn't coming out for months I was considering loading up CTP which I enjoyed a lot just for something different.

So what I'm asking is... what's the scoop on CTP and why do people dis it over CivII? Should I pick up CivII or load up CTP for another spin? CivII is much older no?

Most people don't like CTP because it's not technically part of the Sid Meier series of Civilization games and therefore, according to them, not worthy of consideration. I happen to have all 3 (current) games in the "real" (Sid' Meier's) Civ series and both CTP games, and IMO both have their good points. (There's an old post I made comparing what my opinion of some of the good and bad points of the game were, but it's late over here and I can't be bothered to search for it.) (EDIT: I do recall enjoying the music )

My suggestion: Get Civ2, try a game or two, if you don't like it then take it to some used-CD store and trade it in for something else.
