I still love Civ III after all these years. It's still the best Civ game to me. Unfortunately, Civ III has its limitations and still has a few bugs. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the original source code has been lost by Firaxis, so there will probably never be a refurbished version.
Has anyone proposed creating a clone of Civ III building and programming a game from scratch from the ground up that is almost identical? There might be copyright issues, however, maybe the current holders of the copyrights would give permission to build a stand-alone clone of Civ III. Or perhaps a few changes here and there would qualify it as an original. It could be an open source project, possibly use Kickstarter or something. Maybe name it something other than Civilization if need be.
Perhaps a team could be assembled from the forum to work on the project. Would anyone else be interested in such a project? Does anyone have thoughts on such an endeavor?
