So how important is the Civ IV patch? I looked around a little and it seemed like it was shareware. Is it worth the cost? Is it free somewhere? And are there sites that are safer to get it at? Anyone out there get the patch and then prefer the game without it? And so on....

Thanks in advance for anything you folks can tell me on this....

You can do it in game to, under check for updates

Unlike the terrifying changes patches added to games like you might expect from Blizzard Entertainment (I found Warcraft 3 to be almost unplayable the way they kept messing with stuff clear through frozen thrown each patch)... the Civ 4 patches actually help a lot of lacking areas in the game.

Just to name a few things recently for the Warlords patch off the top of my head...
  • The Celts can make their Unique Unit (the swordsman replacement) with Copper or Iron (instead of just iron).
  • Expansive civ trait got a build bonus for workers
  • Aztec's Jaguar Warrior gets a free promotion that includes forest defense (instead of a jungle defense that was lost if you upgraded the unit).
  • The AI Vassal intelligence check*

*I actually had to turn vassal states off before the patch because I got sick of an AI player down to 1 city constantly being a vassal to another nation who would then instantly declare war on me... even if they were a very good ally the whole game.

Honestly the only change I've seen as being kind of odd is siege units being immune to collateral damage. Siege engines are suppose to counter units moving in big stacks, but what if that big stack is all siege? Thankfully, that's only in warlords, so if you're still playing normal old Civ4 (vanilla) you have a very solid game on your hands when it's patched up to date.

I liked Blizz's patches for SC/BW and W3. Just when things would start getting stale and it would be less about strategy and more of a clickfest, they'd alter the unit balance just enough to make people have to rethink strats all over again. Since I was strategically smart enough, but just too darned slow on the controls, I tended to lose more than I won during the patchless times. But after those patches came out, I'd have several months where I'd slaughter all but the best ladder players.

Ah, I needed to open my eyes more. When I had downloaded the patch earlier and then tried to open it, it told me (I thought) that it was shareware and I would only have it for free for 40 days before having to register. Actually, it was telling me that WinRar (software to open the compressed file) was shareware and blah blah blah. So, of course, the patch has always been free.

In the main menu of the game, click on 'advanced' then 'check for updates'. It's the easiest way.
