Civ look alikes

Ooooh... I always get a bit worked up when I read a comment like this - my best guess is....you've never actually invested more than 15 minutes in playing the game.

I'll try and contain myself, everyone is entitled to an opinion - and I've already summed up my feelings on this kind of statement 2 years ago in my review of CTP at MobyGames - so I'll give it a rest, for now. :)

Plomeros: I would personally highly recommend a couple of oldies, dealing with the colonization period - Imperialism (1 and 2) and Conquest of the New World (the deluxe version is preferrable). They're old but they definitely still hold up gameplay-wise. Just my $0.02.

I've played Alpha Centauri series, and found it excellent. Alien Crossfire is especially difficult if you mod it and drop another alien faction. You've got both alien factions who will not ally with you under any circumstances, and you need to make alliances of convenience with the humans, which isn't all that easy to do either.

That series prompted me to get Civ III.

Imperialism I is an awesome game. Messing around with your imports and exports is a lot more fun than it looks, even if the combat is sort of lame. You should try it if you haven't already (I saw it at Half Price Books for $1.00). I haven't played Imperialism II, so tell me what you think and I might pull it out of the bargain bin.

P.S. Why is it called "Moby" Games? Obviously not after the techno superstar/vegan...

I used to play a lot of CTP, but it needed a lot of mods in order to be a decent game... I found myself going back to Civ II all the time. I was really stoked for CTP II, and then when it came out -- IT WAS ALMOST IDENTICAL! I think the team spent about 15 minutes actually changing the thing. I don't even have it on my hard drive anymore, and I don't have any space considerations.

Civ III all the way!

Call To Power games have something that the "official" Civilization games (I, II and III) lack of: futuristic units, buildings, wonders and science victory. You can go from the warriors or granaries to the plasma tanks or holographic centers, but in the common Civilization ones you can go just to the modern units.

Also, stealth units are an interesting add, and there are much more civilizations and goverments to choose.
