Civ Vanilla not working after installing patch (worked fine before today)

It worked fine for quite some time after installing the patch but today it just doesn't work. I reinstalled it and without the patch it works perfectly but with the patch it will get "hung". It goes to a black screen makes the computer think and then goes back to the desktop.

My operating system is XP, and I haven't done any changes to my computer to cause this as far as I know. Any suggestions?

I finally got it to work so if anyone is having this problem this is what worked for me.

First I did a system restore point to yesterday. Unfortunately it still wasn't working so I reinstalled it again in a different location (the default one rather then where I had it before) and after I patched it the game kept working.

Well I'm unfortunately going to have to bump this up. Unfortunately it's not working again. Most of the time when the game is patched when I start it up it just shows the Civilization 3 pop up and then nothing... it rarely ever goes to the black screen with the movie now! I've reinstalled the game dozens of times with no success.

Any suggestions?

I have the same issue. After installing the patch and starting the game, the screen goes black a couple of times and then I end up back at the desk top.
The game does work with out the patch, but with the v1.29 I cant play. Please please help us out.

same problem for a while aswell no help on the main support thread, ive worked out that 1.21 doesnt work for it either but all patches below it will tbh i havnt got a clue why it might be happening its annoying how it wont even give and error window it just seems to close almost straight after running

Finally! I think I got it. I d/l this "no cd" crack something or other after installing the game, then installing the v1.29f patch. Extract the downloaded file and replace the civ3.exe in the folder with the one from the no cd crack.
It worked for me, hope it works for you.

Sure it may not be allowed on this site but if it's the only way to get a person's legal game to work on their computer correctly then it should be mentioned as a solution when this problem comes up.

it actually worked!!!!!!!! omg thnk you so much ive been having this problem for ages, shame its banned to post the link on the forum hmmm i wonder if any way its possible to mod that crack to fix the problem or be used only by those who have actually bought the game, shame for everyone who didnt get here in time to miss out on being able to fix it but thnk you soooo much anyway
