q: has anyone tried running civ1 on mac os x? if so, does it work?

in the late 90's i tried running it on a PPC G3 system under OS 8.5 but it didn't work then and i haven't tried since. it would be nice if someone know a way to make it work. i recently looked on some screenshots and bacame rather nostalgic, hence my interest.

FYI, Civilization II Gold runs flawlessly under Classic. A much better version than the original IMHO.

There is also a carbon patch for Civ2 in OSX.

I run Civ 1 inside Basilisk II or Mini vMac emulator.
Mini vMac is b/w only, it runs up to system 7.5.5 (possibly also 7.6.x). It emulates a Mac Classic.
Basilisk supports colors and up to OS 8.1, but no sound. It runs better in full screen mode but you can't switch back to OS X unless you "shut down" the emulation. It emulates a Quadra.

In fact, Civ 1 is the only computer game that I still play... :D
I also bought Civ2 and Civ3 some time ago, but they bore me because of their complexity. And I hate the isometric view...

yep. the isometric view was a step backwards in my opinion aswell :( i liked the graphics in civ1, especially in the mac-version with its high 640*480 resolution which was quite an improvement compared to the atari version with its low resolution. and i'm very pleased they brought back the top-down view to C-IV :)
