Hello Everyone!

I have a question for you... maybe someone can help me...

I'm portuguese, and my english skills are..... ok. they aren't. i don't understand english. almost nothing. is there a way of translating the text of civ1 into other languages? i know most text are on plain text files, but maybe it's not possible.

i had to use a dictionary just to write this peace of text....

Hope some one can help...

Well, I haven't tried hard, but I hadn't found one till today, and translate all the txt's would be to time-waster for me, as I study in FEP (Faculdade de Economia do Porto) and I'm having too many works to do...

Maybe if you try to e-mail Firaxis about it they can tell you more about it...

i'm going to translate CIV1 into italian. ;)

There is no problem to translate the files.txt (blurb and so on)
The header of such files (a binary block of about 512 byte) is a structure of pointers to the following paragraphs and CIV recompile itself if you change something in the text. :D

You can use only ascii-127 characters: no accents or other symbols. :scan:

For italian there is no problem: accents can be easily substituted by apostrophes; other western languages may have minor troubles. ;)

:confused: For japanese i have no idea how to translate, sorry.

The big, hard problem is for the text embedded into executable file CIV.EXE: all the names of advances, military units, names of cities and kings is there. :cry:

It is hard to translate because there is not enough space to overwrite the text without touch other data. :(

The only way IMHO is to disassemble the whole executable, translate the text and recompile it, but at the moment i'm not yet able to do it. :sad:

Does anybody have any idea? :confused:
 
You may think this is a good idea. However, my suspicion is you cannot do this legally within the terms of the Civ1 copyright notice. This states:
"Any person/persons reproducing any portion of this program, in any media, for any reason, shall be guilty of Copyright Violation, and shall be subject to civilliability at the discretion of the copyright holder."
If you are disassembling code and recompiling localised code, you cannot help but fall foul of this notice. You may or may not be able to get away with changing the text files on the grounds they are not part of the program and are merely configuration files. But tinkering with embedded messages in the program you will not be able to get away with.

Moderator notice: Bearing in mind the above copyright statement, I regret I cannot allow any more discussion of changes to the Civ1 program code in this forum. The thread may stay open provided this notice is obeyed.
 
You are right.
The copyright on executable civ.exe is a prerequisite which does not allow this great project of localizing civ 1.

So, let's learn English! :king:
I improve my knowledge of English language a lot playing Civilization.
 
Hallo citizens,
i noticed that the paragraph about Horseback Riding is written twice in the BLURB0.TXT file. :scan:

The description of both is similar, but is the first one to be displayed in the :egypt:CIVILOPEDIA:egypt: of the game.

Would you be so kind to check your files and tell me what could be happened? :confused:
