I've just reinstalled civ1 from an old cd I found. When I installed it back on and hit 4 for sb, no sounds worked. All other sound options work except that. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Support for DOS games in XP is poo. Do the following.....

1. Goto Sourceforge and download VDMSound 2.0.4 -
https://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/

This is an open source program that emulates old soundcards, basically designed to overcome XP's sound issues in DOS applications.

2. Install VDMSound 2.0.4

3. From then on, when running an application that has sound problems, instead of double-clicking the shortcut or executable, right-click it and select "Run with VDMS" from the menu.

Problem solved :)

Thanks for the advice, worked great.
One more thing is there anyway to fix it being so slow on XP?

As Matrix pointed out, you cant do it in XP. But you can do it on your PC by either making a DOS partition, or buying a second hard disk and installing DOS on it. Then boot from that drive when playing Civ.

Of course if you do that, VDMS goes out the window and you have to start hunting for DOS drivers for your sound card, or an old soundcard, and a copy of DOS 6.2 :crazyeye:

I'm gonna try out civ on my dads win XP home this weekend. It's 2.66 GHz so it should work.
