There has been much discussion in these forums about the number of Civs in Civ3 - don't stomp on me just yet Stormerne (j/k

) - but it occurs to me that it would be in the commercial interests of Firaxis to have Civ3 'add-ons' just as we had Civ2 Fantastic Worlds etc. This type of commercial strategy is used all the time to keep the original product in the public spot light for a period of time.

There is no reason (I can think of) why Firaxis couldn't or wouldn't bring out add-ons that include additional Civs (notwithstanding the option to customize) and all sorts of other things that weren't included in the first release Civ3. Obviously somethings will be set in concrete - the AI will probably be one - but there is plenty of scope for other things. So what's the deal Dan, any comments on Civ3 add-ons? I'd also be interested to hear what other Fanatics think about this.

Oh, I got money that says there is an add-on that will be released about a year and a half to two after Civ 3's premiere. They won't try to make a civ 4 untill long after (probably another four or five years) and instead will pick up declining sales by releasing add-ons.

I'm betting it will be even sooner. Firaxis released Alien Crossfire less than a year after Alpha Centauri and like it I'm sure the Civ III add-on's main appeal will be additional civilizations, all the ones cut from Civ II and probably a few more.

Based on the vague nature of the news that we've gotten to date, it sure looks like Firaxis is leaving themselves room for add-ons & the like. And, as our esteemed colleague Blue Monday pointed out, it makes perfect business sense. Since it looks like civ3 is going to be so improved, imagine how long it will take to make civ4. In fact, I can't help wondering if they're not already working on some ideas for it (although it's an unlikely scenario).

Listen, strange women lying around in ponds, distributing swords is no basis for a system government.

Oh, they are definitely going to release add on packages. I just hope that they'll at least finish up civ 3 before thinking about Add ons. I wouldn't be surprised if they deliberatly left room for add ons in their design for civ 3. Keep in mind Firaxis is a business and as such will always look for profits. They know Civ 3 won't sell forever and they need to keep pumping out new additions to keep up sales.

That might very well be the discussion Sid Meier is having with the head of Firaxis.

Sid wants to make a full working Civ3; Firaxis wants a continuous flow of money.

Capitalism.
