Civ3 Expansion Pack Announced!

Civ 3 is the only game I have purchased in several years that wasn't multi player, TCP/IP ready. Not having it, is really no sweat off my sack but it should not be something you have to buy.

Personally, I think they'll add back the 5 civs from II, and add one more from America (Incas? Mayans?), one from Africa (Moors?) and one from Eurasia (Hebrews? Ottomans?). What I'd really like to see is a "Create a Civ" feature, where you choose the features of the civ, personality of the leader, city names, etc. I'd love to be High Priest Geddy Lee of the Syrinxians, but that's just me. I doubt that they'd add it anyway.

As far as having 24 civs on the same map, maybe they're adding a "Gigantic" map size, which could also be a reason why they shrank the original sizes.

The most interesting thing will be what the civ-specific units will be. You have to figure the Vikings would have an upgraded trireme (4M?) or a Berzerker (warrior with 2 attack?). It's going to be interesting to see what they can come up with.

Sorry if someone said this already...

If they add 8 new civs, it would be nice to have a few more civ-specific traits to differentiate between the civs. Of course this would require some major changes, but we will be paying for them.

Here's one new trait - Artistic. The Irish would be an example. Culture bonuses?

anyway, just an idea.

I want Vikings and Celts!

another African civ would be good too. I'm not a history expert but c'mon.. there's gotta be another besides Zulu. Somone mentioned Mali? I seem to remember them from high school.

Well, I'd like a Firaxian Civ! If we added 'Civ3 Multiplayer' as a tech, when Sid offers it to me for 5000 gold, I can declare war on him! :nya2:

Seriously though, I'm not buying without a REALLY good editor and a Celtic civ, that, unlike in Civ2, aren't WELSH! I was really annoyed that I had to keep editing towns accomodate for Irish and Scottish cities!

That would be great but I don't know how likely it is. Wouldn't mind a few more units and diplomatic options too.

But I'll buy it just for the civs and MP. Really looking forward to MP.

Never played Civ 2 but why would the Celts be more Welsh then Irish/Scottish. Following my grasp of history the most famous Celts were from Scotland and ireland, The Romans completely gave up on ireland and Hadrians wall was built to stop the invading from Scotland. I'd like to see the Celts in the game personally, not sure who else though...

There been alot of talk about the new civ's, but what about the UU for these newbies ?
The most talked about civs are:

Vikings - easy, viking long boats, some bonus to movement or able to safely travel sea squares, replaces galleys
:viking:

Spain - conquestadore ( spelling ?) upgraded cav unit, plus to offence, or maybe a frigate unit, spainish armarda - thou they did get a hiding by nelson :p

inca - humm, i guess a upgraded spear, or something, ideas

mongol - easy, upgraded horseman, mounted archer, 2,2,2 maybe

turks -

Celts - some kind of swordman maybe

Carhage -

Can't think of any thing for the canadians or the ozzies!, maybe a WW2 unit, upgraded riflemen or something, maybe mounties for the canadians ;) Maybe Boomerang archers or something, that would be cool 2,2,1

Anyway, i don't have enough world history knownledge to do this topic, so guys and girls please add your favs :D

Exactly. However, in Civ2, the Celtic cities were all like Cardiff, Swansea etc.

I don't mind SOME welsh cities, but the Scottish and Irish have to be included.

If not, I'd like a Scottish Civ, please! IMO, we had MORE impact than the English. American culture is all well and good, but where would it be now without Baird's Televison? Where would medicine be without Penecillan, invented by the Scottish Flemming? The first King of what came to be known as Britain was Scottish, and it was the 51st Highland Division defending the retreating Soldiers at Dunkirk.

But that's not what this thread is for.

I want the Celts or Scots!

Much remains to be seen, but I am giddy. Top questions:

1. Will the scenarios feature changed leaders for existing nations, ie. if they do WW2 (and that ought to be a given) will we have to face Bismark, Caesar and Tokugawa?

2. Are the eight new Civs going to be interchangeable or do you think perhaps the eight new Civs are really the scenario civs or maybe both? For example, if they do a Mongols vs. Moors. vs. Spain vs. Turkey type scenario, maybe those are four of the new civs...

3. I am guessing there wont be a scenario editor, for the unscrupulous reason that if we all pay $25 for the expansions, why let us fill the internet with our own quality scenario. And it better be $25 or less and not another full $40. I already bought the game twice!!!

4. Predictions:
1. Age of Exploration scenario with the Incas, Spanish, possibly Dutch, old England and France and Iroquios and Aztecs all thrown together - hopefully better Privateers.

2. Alexander age scenario with existing Civs.

3. Lots of crashes when you try the online version. Not to be a pessimist, but I'll bet they need lots of patches for the expansion.

4. Future scenario with alien civs, robots, oh wouldn't it look delicious with the new graphics?

5. I fail to finish my dissertation because of playing Civ and successfully sue Firaxis for the cash value of a career in academia (perhaps about $80,000).

1) I've got no use for ANY extra civilizations; I've never played anything other than Roman, so really don't see getting around to any new ones.

2) I won't plat multiplayer; don't have the time.

So what's in the XP for me? I dunno. Nothing that I see.

Tom

The eight most popular new civs according to my poll would be:

1. The Spanish (19.76%)
2. The Mongols (12.57%)
3. A Scandinavian civ (11.98)
4. The Arabs (7.78%)
The Celts (7.78%)
6. The Carthaginians/Phoenicians (6.59%)
7. The Scots(5.39%)
8. The Turks (4.79%)
The Jews (4.79%)
(on May 2nd, 6pm GMT)

Found below:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15780&highlight=excluded+civs

Actually, that's 9, but the Turks and Jews came in joint eighth.
It'll be interesting to see how closely the new civs match popular opinion!

Hooray for more Civs!

I don't care about MP (because I can't commit time to it)...but I like the idea of more Civs...question is, though, how will the Civ Abilities work? Will there be more dupes, or will they add a whole extra category? ("Diplomatic" Ability 1: lower cost to build Courthouses/Police Stations...Ability 2: ?...start with Alphabet (The Wheel gets moved to Commercial, and Militaristic always starts with Warrior Code)) And will they rearrange the categories? (so that the Americans become Diplomatic and Industrious, as an example)

And since they shrunk the Large/Huge maps with the latest patch, are they preparing a GINORMOUS map that has all 24 Civs on it? THAT could be interesting....

What a bizarre reaction. I've always assumed that Egypt, Babylon and Persia included their descendant civs. They don't have separate civs for England in Christianity and England's pagan years. That's what developing Monotheism is for.

As for the XP set, the money is in my bank account, waiting. I'm rooting for the Mayans, and tonight, I will tell my g-friend that she is almost certain to be able to play a game with Trondhiem in it after all. And I have this special bottle of bourbon, I've already called ahead to order the pizza, and oh yeah, I've renamed my dog "Sid Meier," even though she's a girl.

"Tough luck, Sid."

"woof, woof?"

Good work, Firaxis, and I say that sight unseen.

R.III

You are bizarre and almost all civplayers with you.

Why didnt firaxis include "the visigoths" instead of the Spanish in civ 2, or the Anglo-Saxons instead of the "English" or the "Gupta" instead of "India" or the "Gallians" instead of the "French" or the "Suzdal" instead of the "Russians"?And what the hell do the Americans do in the game?

Even though the French,English,Spanish,Russians,Japanese and Indian civs were all coexisting with the ARABS and TURKS and NOT with the Persians, Babylonians or Egyptians the civteam had to exclude these two magnificent MUSLIMVIVILIZATIONS.

Its always the same.Although both from the same era we see TURKS but no Arabs in CTP, but we see Hebrews  and Assyrians!

You know... you westerners are right.Sid Meyer is one of you, the game is his we cant say anything except editing the game to create our great civs ourselves. If we want a civgame with our civs in it ,we must program and create our own game and distribute it all in Arabic with Urdu,Indonesian,Persian and Turkish versions in the muslimcountries.

We ADMIT we have no right to complain, except maybe the right to critisize cause we are a part of the buyers too.

But please dont give me the standard hypocrite reaction we always hear. This is absolutely NO coincidence.

The game is western-orientated and the team of civ is islamofobic (maybe cause Sid is a Jew, hence the Jewish familyname) or they are just very ognorant about history and the indispendible role of Arabs and Turks therein which I DOUBT.

No problem. What come's round goes round, what goes up must come down, no one lives forever at his peak.

Happy civving everyone.

Vikings - We need some nordic folk here, right?

The Turks - Europe would look much different if the Huns, Seljuks and Ottomans didn't exist...

Austria - I doubt it, although it has been a major force, "The Austrian-Hungarian Empire"... Also the civ that defended Europe against the attack of the Turks. However, Germany already has the city "Salzburg" in its city list...

Spanish - A very important civ addition.

Mongolians - Genghis Kahn rules.

I wish they don't forget to put a mini-map on the scenario editor... It is ESSENTIAL for the user-developers.

A new expansion pack! Hooray!

Spain ought to be one of the new civs.

I hope it includes more ways to distinguish one type of government from another in the editor.

It would be nice if the multi player games can be saved and resumed later, are there any online multi player games like that?

:goodjob: Finally!

Oh, well - they should have shipped MP with the game on the first release

Dunno if I should be extatic or not - we get what we have wanted for long - but most ppl seem to accept the expansion pack as something we would have to pay for.

I believe I first saw the idea of civ3 mentioned in 1997 - then it was released in fall 2001 - without MP, though I believe MP was supposed to be included back then. Guess it was marketing strategies that made them ship the game without - but I always had my hopes out for a free expansion-pack.

I do hope the XP will be nicely done - then I can say - GHEE! THANX! and pay with a :)

But I can't understand why most replies in here seem to accept this as a fact - and one other thing; why doesn't civ3.com say anything about this?

Anyways - look forward to read about ppls experience with civ3 mp - I'm not going to buy the XP...at least not without a VERY good reason. BTW - MP was the only thing I wanted in Civ3 (seeing how MP in SMAC was quite cool...)
