haven't seen a good irc channel for civ4 yet... so i made one in hopes that it will grow. Reason for doing so is bringing the community together, making it easier to set up games, find ladder games, discuss strats, keep in touch with other civ4 fans and do just about anthing else relating to civ4. :)

wow a wholl 20 people i gess this game is played more offline then it is online... or civ 4 people dont know what irc is all about...

The game is played very much more offline than online. ;)

There is a very vocal, hardcore minority that plays online/MP. There is a significant number that *try* MP, but the vast majority is happy playing offline/SP.

;)

And as for your original post, That's what these (and other) forums are for. ;)

MP is a lot of fun, but forget about finishing a game all the way through (at least in my experience) unless you are playing with friends and can play over multiple sessions. There is nothing more frustrating than getting 6 hours into a game that everyone ditches.

I like single player because I don't have to wait for other people to finish their turns.

What efexeye said is what's kept me from trying multiplayer so far. I'd love to get a huge, year long PBEM thing going with a dozen or more people, but finding that many people that I know would stick with it seems like a headache.

As for IRC, not many people who use teh internets these days are familiar with it.

Yeah, I wouldn't even try to play a random game with people across the internet. MP is fantastic, but I'll stick to playing with friends across the LAN in my apartment.

Basically, I find MP most satisfying when we treat it pretty much like getting together for a board game. When I can't arrange that, I play SP.

PBEM intrigues me, but...I'm pretty sure I'm way, way too impatient to really get into playing it that way. Besides, I always had a hard time making sure I got my daily turn back when I played door games. This led to me getting waxed a lot in BRE...

True, but just like Usenet and WHOIS, for those of us who know about it and how to use it, it can be a great resource.

Unlike gopher, which has pretty much fallen into the internet's bit bucket.
