Civ5 is a great LAN-game, played some 40+ hours in 3 days. Great fun!

I just had LAN-party last weekend since thursday.
We have a LAN-weekend two or three times a year, ever since Civ3PTW allowed us to play multiplayer civ.

We played some 40+ hours of Civ5, it was great.
We played 4 full games (one science vic, one culture vic (me) and one domination vic) and two half games.
Civ5 works absolutely amazing in multiplayer, both as a game as in stability.

We never had an OOS, although one person had some problems with his connection (although we later found out he had a 'network optimizer program' which was interfering) and was kicked out of the game by the game and had to rejoin the game . The nice thing was that that wasn't a problem at all, even when he was hosting.
But mind you, in the 100+ hours of Civ5 we played on a LAN we never have had any problems (apart from the early beginning, a year ago, it often gave an OOS).

Also the game balancing is quite alright, we all played different styles and strategies, but were quite even most of the time.

I played Babylon, France (my cultural vic) and Egypt, other popular civs were China, Korea, Russia and Japan (guess who won the domination victory ;) )
Mostly we played on a small map, pangaea, no AI, 8 CS.

And I just wanted to say it was a great weekend and Civ5 is a great game for a LAN! :)

This is great anandus. Multiplayer is always fun with the right guys. Have you tried with 6 players? 4 players is rarely problematic. At 6 players it can be sometimes.

Rules for everyone to get a good 6 players game :

-play under dx9(not dx11)
-play with local friends/people (max 500 miles/650 km away)
-play with known steam buddies(if it crashes, you can reload the game)
-don't ragequit if you are rushed while you build the GL :D

Yeah, it's really great, it takes the game to a whole different level.

It's a LAN, so most issues don't apply. And we've had a 6-player game on a different LAN as well, didn't notice any issues there either, though.
That's why I find it strange as I often see a lot of complaining about MP, but in the 100+ hours of multiplayer I/we never had any issues.
But maybe we were just lucky.

Anyway, I just wanted to give off a different, positive, sound :)

The GL-thing is an interesting issue.
There's a lot of game theory and reverse-reverse-psychology going on :p
In one of the games it wasn't until turn 100 that the GL was built, because everybody was expecting someone else to build it, so everyone diverted their attention and resource to something else

did you have house rules for science only victory or no wars or such?
No special rules*, we're just not the warmongering kind, really.
Sometimes we we have a scuffle or beat up a CS, but we get most of our kicks getting wonders before the others and such.

Although we all keep a hefty army in case things really do hit the fan. Even though we're not the warmongering kind, we can fight serious wars. It's a bit of MAD-deterrence, actually.
To illustrate: For every city I had I had about 4 to 6 units in my army. Which I personally would never ever have in a singleplayer game. And I had to use them too (didn't work out, as you can tell by the domination victory :p ).

* there is one rule: Everybody has an option to ask for a reroll of the map. But only once. And it needs to be verified by someone else that it really is a crappy start.
